While it's almost expected that one's hotel will offer free Wi-Fi in 2016, there are still plenty of brands charging guests an extra fee for Internet access inside their guestroom.

In many of those cases, Wi-Fi can cost a guest somewhere between $10 to $20 per day on top of their stay.

What's more, guests sometimes have to pay extra for faster speeds.

With recent studies showing that guests - especially business travelers - seek complimentary Wi-Fi above all else, including free breakfast and parking, many hotels and brands are offering the service for free in order to better position themselves to compete.

Fortunately, for those guests who are fed up with Internet fees, Hotel Scoop's Jamie Rhein created a comprehensive list of hotel companies and brands that currently offer free Wi-Fi.

Here's how it breaks down:

Accor Hotels: ibis Hotels, Novotel, MGallery, Mercure, Pullman and Sofitel

Best Western Hotels

Carlson Rezidor Hotels: Park Plaza, Country Inn and Suites, Park Inn and Radisson

Choice Hotels: Cambria Suites, Comfort Inn, Comfort Suites, Clarion, Sleep Inns, Econolodge, Quality Inns and Ascend Collection

Wyndham Hotels: Baymont Inn and Suites, Days Inn, Hawthorn Suites, Howard Johnson, Knights Inn, Microtel Inns and Suites,Night Hotels, Ramada, Super 8, Travelodge, Wyndham Garden and Wingate By Wyndham

The good news for guests in search of free Wi-Fi, Starwood announced Tuesday that it plans to significantly expand its portfolio of Specialty Select brands in the state of New York over the next three years. The company said it will expand its portfolio in New York by 10 hotels by the end of 2018 across its Aloft, Element and Four Points brands, the three brands that offer free guestroom Internet.

"With our tech-forward mindset and innovative programming - a sweet spot in the category - our brands have re-energized the mid-market space and created an unprecedented level of buzz in the development community," said Starwood's global brand leader for specialty select brands Brian McGuinness in a statement.
