The movie "Home Alone 2" gives a really good idea of why staying in a hotel for the holidays is the best (remember little Kevin McAllister checking into the Plaza Hotel and having a marvelous time), says Travel + Leisure, but there are some other reasons too.
"Well, you may not be a kid, and you may not be in New York City, but you can still have a marvelous time for the holidays by staying in a hotel instead of with family," writes Jessica Plautz.
A HotelTonight survey has revealed some of the many reasons staying in a hotel can alleviate some of the stress of the holidays at home.
"Adult children's biggest complaint about their parents was that they "pose opinions I don't agree with," while parents' biggest grievance was that their children "spend too much time on their smartphones." (Maybe if they weren't tired of the opinions, they'd get off their phones?)," says Plautz.
Chores are seemingly always a problem.
"Only 47 percent of parents said their adult children offered to help with chores over the holidays," the survey found.
Other annoyances for adult children: personal questions about love life, talk about their appearance, questions about the career and extended family.

What really aggravates parents? Apart from smartphones and chores, sleeping in too late and children who don't share information about their personal lives are the other leading grievances.
"Of course, staying in a hotel is not going to get rid of all of these complaints-but it can put more emphasis on making the time spent together about quality," writes Plautz.
