Airport Staff Throughout Italy Plan To Strike

Travelers whose flight plans take them through Italy next week should be prepared for disruption.

Airport baggage handlers and security staff in the country have announced a 24-hour strike action beginning January 8, according to a report in Business Travel News (BTN) Europe.

The national strike was called by union leaders representing the baggage handlers in Milan. It will begin at midnight on January 8 and last through midnight January 9.

Workers from Ags Handling, Mle-Bcube, Airport Handling, Aviapartner Handling, and Swissport Italy, will all be involved in the strike. The workers from these groups staff both the Milan Malpensa and Linate airports, BTN reported.

However, the strike will not be limited to Milan. Delays are also anticipated throughout Italy's popular tourist regions including at Rome’s Fiumicino Airport, Venice’s Marco Polo airport and at the airport in Treviso. Security staff from Adr Assistance, Adr Security and Triveneto Sicurezza also plan to strike for 24 hours in those locations.

Florence’s airport is also expected to be impacted, with ground staff there participating in the strike.

The airports involved in the labor action are not expected to come to a complete standstill however. Italian law requires a minimum level of essential services to continue when strikes take place.
