Carnival Spirit Rescues 24 People Stranded at Sea

The crew of the Carnival Spirit rescued 24 people who were stranded on a small boat in the Caribbean Sea today.

The individuals were spotted by the Carnival crew as the ship was sailing toward Aruba, near the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico. According to a statement released by the cruise line, the individuals appeared to be “in distress” when they were spotted.

Carnival was unable to provide further details, however, about the boat the individuals were traveling on and what the nature of the distress was. It is also not clear where the stranded boat was headed. The ages of the individuals on the stranded boat were also not released.

All of the rescued individuals were checked by medical personnel on the Carnival Spirit and found to be in good condition. Ship officers contacted the Coast Guard in Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic to coordinate a transfer of the 24 people.

The individuals were transferred this afternoon and the Carnival Spirit resumed its voyage. The Carnival Spirit departed from Miami on April 8 and is on a week-long cruise that’s slated to return home April 15.
