Hundreds of flights into and out of the United Kingdom have been canceled, diverted or delayed due to heavy snowfall caused by Winter Storm Caroline.
According to CNN, Central England, Wales and Northern Ireland were among the hardest hit by the storm, with some areas reporting up to 11 inches of snow.
At least three airports, Stansted in central London, Luton located some 30 miles north of the British capital, and Birmingham Airport were closed earlier in the day, while their runways were cleared of snow.
At Heathrow, the U.K.'s busiest airport, the "flow rate" was decreased, allowing for fewer landings and takeoffs per hour, which has also led to delays and cancellations, according to The Independent.
In total, British Airways has canceled more than 100 flights, including some international departures to Toronto and Washington D.C.
"We're very sorry that some of our customers' travel plans have been affected by severe adverse weather conditions," a British Airways representative told The Independent. "Heavy rain overnight and snowfall this morning, combined with a reduction in the number of flights able to land at Heathrow have caused disruption to our flight schedule. Like other airlines, we are experiencing some delays and cancellations."
Other international carriers, including Aer Lingus, Brussels Airlines, Lufthansa, Ryanair and Swiss have also had flights affected by the weather conditions.
"Weather across the UK and Europe is resulting in some passengers experiencing disruption to their journeys. Please check your flight status with your airline before traveling to the airport," read a tweet from Heathrow Airport this morning.
Causing additional chaos, the weather has resulted in power outages in parts of the city, which is affecting portions of the London Underground's Piccadilly Line, a subway route which serves Heathrow International Airport, leaving airport-bound passengers unable to reach their destination.

The weather system on in the U.K. comes on the heels of Winter Storm Benji, which created massive headaches for travelers across the southern United States earlier this week, causing more than 100 flight cancellations at Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson alone.
