Hurricane Beryl continued its destructive path as the storm made landfall in Texas on Monday morning as a Category 1 hurricane.

According to AccuWeather.com, Hurricane Beryl made landfall near Matagorda at around 3:50 a.m. CT with torrential rains, flooding storm surges, and powerful wind gusts that reached 70-90 miles per hour.

As a result, most of the Texas Gulf Coast is under Hurricane Warnings, Storm Surge Warnings and Tropical Storm Warnings, with Tornado Watches also being issued. Storm surge is expected to reach up to seven feet.

The National Weather Service issued a flash flooding warning for the Houston and Galveston metro areas. 3-6 inches of rain have already fallen and another 2-4 additional inches are possible. Areas of East Texas could see 5-10 inches of rain, with some regions getting as much as 15 inches.

AccuWeather’s current forecast calls for Beryl to weaken as it moves north, but carry tropical depression wind strength and flooding from Arkansas to Michigan throughout the week.

As a result, airlines in the United States have canceled more than 1,300 flights on Monday, according to FlightAware.com. United Airlines and Southwest Airlines were the carriers most impacted by the storms, as of 8:30 p.m. ET, while Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport and William P. Hobby Airport were dealing with the most cancellations.

The cruise industry also continues to be impacted by the hurricane, as Carnival Cruise Line officials announced that itineraries were adjusted for Carnival Dream, Carnival Paradise, Carnival Breeze, Carnival Liberty and Carnival Horizon. No changes have been made to homeport operations at this time.

Royal Caribbean also revealed that the end of Mariner of the Seas’ current sailing was delayed by one day, and a port of call in Mexico was skipped, which extended the current voyage and postponed the next scheduled itinerary by one day.

Beryl formed on June 29 and became the season’s first hurricane, carving a path of destruction across the Caribbean and into Mexico before making its final landfall in the US.
