Cruises bound for the Caribbean amid Hurricane Beryl are altering their itineraries to protect passenger safety in the face of the deadly storm.
The record-breaking Category 5 storm, which has already caused six deaths, is bearing down on Jamaica. After that, it is expected to head to the Cayman Islands and the Yucatan Peninsula before
losing steam somewhere around the Gulf of Mexico and potentially impacting Texas, according to The Weather Channel.
Major cruise lines are adjusting plans accordingly. Here’s a round-up of the latest developments:
Royal Caribbean
The largest cruise ship in the world, Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas, will skip visits to two islands in the southeastern Caribbean amid the storm, according to the travel site Cruise.
Separately, Royal Caribbean’s Wonder of the Seas has cancelled planned stops in Roatán and Costa Maya. The ship will instead visit Nassau,
Bahamas.
Royal Caribbean has not released the total number of ships impacted by the hurricane, according to The Guardian.
“The
safety of our guests, crew and communities we visit is our top priority,” a Royal Caribbean spokesperson said, per The Guardian. “Along with our Chief Meteorologist, we are closely monitoring the progression of Hurricane Beryl, and are making adjustments
to some of our Caribbean sailings for the comfort and safety of our guests and crew.”
Norwegian Cruise Line
The hurricane is also impacting Norwegian Cruise Line. The Norwegian Breakaway has had to entirely revise a planned weeklong itinerary in the region.
“To circumvent the path of hurricane Beryl and forecasted inclement weather, we have made the
decision to take a safer, alternative route,” the cruise line said in a letter to passengers, per The Guardian. “Despite our best efforts, and with the weather disturbances out of our control, we have canceled our calls to Roatan Bay Islands, Honduras;
Harvest Caye, Belize; Costa Maya and Cozumel, Mexico.”
Carnival Cruise Line
Carnival Cruise Line has also altered the original routes of two of its cruises, per CNN. Carnival Horizon, which was slated to visit Grand Cayman in the Cayman Islands on July 3, scrapped that visit. A planned July 4 stop in Cozumel, Mexico, was also eliminated in favor of a Nassau, Bahamas
stop on July 5.
Carnival Liberty rescheduled a planned July 5 to Cozumel to avoid the storm. Instead the ship visited that port yesterday.
Additional Ships Impacted
It has also been reported by The Points Guy that Disney Fantasy, the Celebrity Beyond and Margaritaville
at Sea's Islander ships are being rerouted.
The cruise ship diversion plans are just the latest impacts of the hurricane. Several airports throughout the Caribbean have also been closed as the storm barrels through the region.
