A woman is facing criminal charges after allegedly stealing $5,600 in cash from a fellow passenger at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport over the weekend.
The New York Daily News reported 61-year-old Nadira Malilk was removed from her Emirates flight by authorities Sunday morning after she was suspected of stealing $4,300 in cash and $1,300 in Chinese yen from a security bin at a screening checkpoint at the airport.
Port Authority police spokesman Joseph Pentangelo told the News that Malik became a suspect after police reviewed security footage from the scene.
Malik, a Bangladeshi national, allegedly hid the U.S. cash in a Cheerios box in her carry-on bag, while the yen was placed inside of a zipper compartment in the same bag.
According to Pentangelo, after being caught the woman asked if she could simply return the money to the victim, identified only as a 60-year-old man from China.
Instead, Malilk was charged with grand larceny and criminal possession of stolen property and was scheduled to appear in a Queens courtroom Monday.
