National Hurricane Center Tracking Disturbance

Another travel-disrupting storm could be forming. August and September are usually when the hurricane season heats up in the Atlantic basin.

Now comes word that the National Hurricane Center is tracking a disturbance that could form into a bigger storm and affect the United States and the Caribbean.

The agency said the storm has potential and could become Hurricane Debra. It could develop as early as this coming week, said the National Hurricane Center. But a phenomenon, known as Saharan Dust, could impede that.

"If that system is able to survive the hostile conditions as it continues westward, it may encounter more favorable conditions for tropical development near the Caribbean or the Gulf of Mexico around the start of August," AccuWeather Chief On-Air Meteorologist Bernie Rayno said in a statement.

Said National Hurricane Center Deputy Director Jamie Rhome: "If a system is near land and there is potential for development, the National Hurricane Center won't wait before it issues advisories, even if the system hasn't become an actual storm. This gives residents time to prepare."
