On Sunday, a Delta Air Lines regional plane skidded off the runway at a Northern Michigan airport due in part to the snowy conditions at the facility.
According to 9and10News.com, the Skywest plane was landing at Pellston Regional Airport in Michigan after a flight from Detroit at around 11 p.m. local time when it skidded off the runway. There were no injuries related to the rough landing, but the National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration are conducting a full investigation.
One of the passengers on the flight, identified as Dan Wickham, said the plane didn't slow down as usual when it touched down on the Pellston airport runway.
"It came in, he tried braking and clearly the braking was not doing a heck of a lot, and right at the end he shifted into reverse thrust," Wickham told 9and10News.com. "When the reverse thrust came on there was a huge amount of snow everywhere, you looked outside you couldn't see anything and that's when suddenly, bang, we just came to a rather abrupt stop."
"I was actually in the very front seat and the flight attendant was sitting with her face towards the back and her comment to me was, 'well that was interesting wasn't it' and I smiled and said, 'you know that was pretty exciting,'" Wickham continued.
Wickham also said that the passengers on the plane remained calm throughout the ordeal and stayed patient after the flight came to stop in the snowy area at the end of the runway.
"They'll look at conditions and I'm sure they'll have interviews with the pilot and take all the information they can get and then try and make a determination," Airport manager Kelley Atkins told 9and10News.com. "That's the most important thing, as long as nobody is hurt and that's the first thing you try to make sure where you're at with that situation, we can deal with the rest."
