On Monday, heavy snow from Winter Storm Orson is causing cancellations and delays at airports in the Northeast.
According to Weather.com, winter storm warnings have been put into effect Monday from upstate New York to Maine, where meteorologists are predicting areas could receive as much as 16 inches of snow.
Winter Storm Orson follows another storm which dumped snow on the region Sunday but has since moved off the East Coast. Areas from Washington, D.C. to Maine are now dealing with high winds from the departing winter storm.
As for travel, the snow in the Northeast is causing airline delays and cancellations and high winds were taking down trees and power lines, which has inhibited driving conditions along the East Coast.
"Travel will be treacherous with visibilities briefly below a quarter mile at times," the National Weather Service said in a statement. "There will be blowing and drifting of the snow as well. Some power outages are expected today."
FlightAware.com reported as of 9:45 a.m. ET that Boston's Logan International Airport alone had reported over 300 canceled flights. Other facilities such as New Jersey's Newark Liberty International Airport, New York's LaGuardia Airport and Baltimore-Washington International Airport are also reporting over 250 combined cancellations.
In addition to the delays and cancellations, a plane at Hanscom Field in Bedford, Massachusetts, skidded off a runway Sunday and slid into a grassy area. There were no injuries reported.
Flights are the only means of transportation being impacted by the storm. Amtrak is reporting on the rail company's official website that the Acela Express and Northeast Regional services may experience delays between Boston and New York. In addition, the Downeaster will also be offering limited service Monday.
Regardless of which form of transportation travelers will use Monday, make sure to call ahead to ensure your flight or rail travel hasn't been canceled or delayed. For those hitting the road, give yourself extra time to deal with traffic and treacherous conditions.
