Inclement weather across much of the country continued to affect flights through the weekend, forcing more than 1,400 cancellations and 5,300 delays nationwide Sunday, according to flight-tracking website FlightAware.com.
Since the winter storm systems began impacting major U.S. airports late last week, more than 5,000 flights have been canceled with nearly 20,000 having experienced delays. The winter weather hampered operations at airports throughout the U.S., including Chicago's O'Hare International Airport, Denver International Airport and Newark Liberty International Airport, among others.

The Big Four major airlines - American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, United Airlines and Southwest Airlines - each issued waivers ahead of time to passengers affected by the disruptions.
Meanwhile, Frontier Airlines issued an apology to some air travelers Monday who were forced to wait at Denver International Airport for more than 24 hours because of snowstorm-related problems.
As of 9:45 a.m. ET Monday, FlightAware.com is reporting just over 200 flight cancellations within, into or out of the U.S. and 650-plus delays within, into or out of the country.
Fortunately, the forecast for this week looks much more promising for holiday travelers with a change in the jet stream pattern expected to bring warmer temperatures to large parts of the U.S. ahead of Christmas weekend, according to Weather.com.
