Bowman's Travel Brief: River vs. Ocean Cruise

Two weeks ago, I sailed on a river cruise.

Last week, I sailed on an ocean cruise.

Which one was better you ask? It's difficult to choose as both were great in their own way.

Cruising remains a popular choice for travel, and it's easy to see why. The options are seemingly endless, from river to ocean, big ships to yacht-style and port destinations all over the world.

If I had to choose though, I'd pick the Nile River cruise on my magical tour through Egypt.

That doesn't mean the ocean voyage onboard Royal Caribbean's Symphony of the Seas (the world's largest cruise ship) was bad because it was far from it. There was so much to do, and I really wish I had more time to explore everything.

With cruising though, it's all about personal preference. You have to know which ship is right for your style of travel and the different destinations on the journey will of course make an impact.

I thoroughly enjoyed both, but the more peaceful setting of a river cruise gets the edge, for now.

What's your favorite style of cruising? Have you done both? If not, give them a try. You may fall in love with a new way of travel. Experiencing new things is what travel is all about anyway.

Travel agents, do you know where your clients stand when it comes to cruising? Get the conversation started. After all, wave season is approaching and there will be cruise deals to snag.

Advice from an Agent

Page Cook is a veteran travel agent and owner of Graham Travel located in North Carolina. She can be reached at [email protected]

When asked what she sees as the key differences between a river and ocean cruise, Cook said:

"Basically, river cruise ships are much smaller and more intimate than ocean vessels and hold fewer passengers. It's like comparing a boutique hotel to a mega resort.

In my opinion, a river cruise is more of a cultural experience. The ocean cruise ship can be a destination itself."

Cook's advice for first-time cruisers:

"They really need to make sure the cruise line and ship is a good fit for them. While cruising is similar, each cruise line has its own personality and cruise experience…

Make sure you realize what is included on a cruise. Do not assume everything is included.

Also, really look at the type of staterooms onboard and make sure you understand the size and most importantly the location of the stateroom. For example: if you suffer from motion sickness you may want a mid-ship stateroom.

Make sure you understand the type of documentation you need for your upcoming cruise. Make sure all names match that documentation. This is so important!

Utilize your travel agent's knowledge and don't be afraid to ask questions."

When asked what type of clients should book a river cruise vs. an ocean cruise, Cook said:

"Clients that book river cruises are looking for a more relaxed type experience, but also enjoy the more detailed itineraries. They do not care about all of the restaurant or lounges. It's truly about the destinations and being able to port right at the town/cities they are visiting.

I think ocean cruisers are guests looking for lots of different restaurants and entertainment. Multi-generational families would be a good choice. There is something for everyone on board these ships. There is definitely a nightlife scene, but there are areas on the ship that do offer a little quieter retreat.

If you are looking for more of an onboard experience, then ocean cruising is more suitable. River cruises typically do not have free days on the boat, they are stopping each day at a different port."

And lastly, Cook's advice to travel agents who sell cruises is to "Don't assume anything about your clients. Qualify your clients by asking the right questions.

Know your product. As a travel agent, do ship inspections or take a cruise yourself. The best information is always first-hand knowledge. I also try to attend any trainings in my area and do webinars."
