Off the mainland of Honduras is a small but beautiful island.

G Adventures details a recent journey to Isla de Roatán and all of its wonders.

Upon arriving, Linda Iliste of G Adventures wrote "I was struck by the empty beaches and lush tropical vegetation, surrounded by turquoise waters. The main settlement, Coxen Hole, or Roatán Town, took its name from the pirate John Coxon who, according to rumor, anchored his ship there sometime toward the end of the 15th century. Since then, many ships have done the same; as a result, the port is the town's de facto central hub."

A tropical place with amazing views that has a history of pirates. How cool is that?

You can also see several wrecked ships just sitting in the water around the island.

For the really secluded spots, head over to the West End. If peace and quiet are your goals for visiting, you'll thoroughly enjoy this area.

But the Island's true attraction is the fact that it's so close to the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, which is the second largest reef in the world behind Australia's Great Barrier Reef.

It's a sensational place for scuba diving, getting up close with colorful fish and corals. Or perhaps you'd prefer to explore those shipwrecks a little closer on your dive.
