10 Ways to Experience New York City's Icons in New Ways

It's the city that never sleeps, thus giving rise to the constant reimagining of well-loved tourist attractions. You could visit this city every year and find something new to explore, or return to just your favorite monuments and still find something new each time. From recently opened to coming soon additions, here's how to see some of your top spots in a whole new way.

Earlier this year, the Statue of Liberty Museum opened on Staten Island in New York Harbor. There is an immersive theater telling the story of the statue, an engagement gallery with memorabilia surrounding the statue, the Statue of Liberty's original torch and more, all inside a climate-controlled environment-perfect for those hot summer days or cold, snowy winters.

Want to take a step back in time to the Golden Age of airline travel? The TWA Hotel recently opened as the only on-site hotel for the JFK airport. The entire hotel is 1960's glamour with fourteen restaurants and bars-one lounge is even built out of a 1958 Starline airplane. Guests can even relax in an infinity pool on the rooftop while looking out at the runway.

Central Park is a must-visit no matter how many times you've been to the city. From the Balto statue to the Conservatory Garden to the Central Park Zoo, there is always something new to explore. The Belvedere Castle located within the park just finished its 15-month renovation over the summer and is once again open to the public. The building is over 160 years old and provides amazing views of the Great Lawn.

Now guests will get even more during their tour of the Empire State Building, as a second-floor museum opened just over a month ago. The Second Floor Observatory Experience takes visitors through the history of the building with interactive experiences. But the Empire State Building-in addition to NYC & Company-is bringing even more to the famous building this fall. The NYC: Above and Beyond Exhibit will make its debut on the 80th floor. Ideal for visitors who aren't sure exactly what they want to see next when visiting the city, recommendations will be tailored to visitors after a short questionnaire.

For those who like to come to the city for a shopping spree but maybe can't afford all the shops on 5th Avenue, make your way over to St. George Terminal via the Staten Island Ferry. Empire Outlets opened this past spring and is a shopaholic's paradise, with 100 retail stores and restaurants ranging from a Nike Outlet to Nordstrom Rack.

It's always important to check out what new exhibits or special events may be going on at your favorite museums. The Met is gearing up to celebrate its 150th Anniversary next year with a whole list of special features. But in the meantime, the highly-anticipated 'Felix Vallotton: Painter of Disquiet' exhibit is planned to debut later this fall and run until late January.

The Museum of Modern Art is currently undergoing a renovation project which is set to end in late October. This reformation project will not only improve the well-loved spaces of current exhibits, but it will provide additional room by increasing the museum's total space by a third.

It's some sort of rite of passage to get a hotdog from Nathan's Famous Hot Dogs at Coney Island, right? And while the summer may provide the warm weather, the fall is still a great time to make the trek over to the iconic boardwalk and amusement park. Visit the New York Aquarium-the oldest operating aquarium in the United States-for their 'Ocean Wonders: Sharks!' exhibit, or plan a trip for next spring when Luna Park will debut three new rides.

For the nature lovers, the New York Botanical Garden is a can't miss, currently showcasing Brazilian Modern: The Living Art of Roberto Burle Marx. There will also be a special short-lived exhibit from October 25 until November 17 titled Kiku: Spotlight on Tradition, highlighting chrysanthemums.

The Apollo Theater has been around for 85 years and to celebrate this milestone, the theatre is bringing back the adaption Ta-Nehisi Coates' Between the World and Me, the prominent Amateur Night at the Apollo and more. They're also amping up for the historic Harlem theater to transform into The Apollo Performing Arts Center.
