Officials from Alaska Airlines announced that flight
operations resumed early Friday morning after its fleet of planes was
temporarily grounded for several hours due to what the carrier is calling an “information
technology outage.”
According to ABCNews.com,
representatives from Alaska Airlines said that around 230 flights were canceled
due to the outage, but FlightAware.com
showed that over 270 flights had been canceled by the carrier since the
technical interruption.
Another 250-plus flights have experienced delays due
to the outage.
As a result, the airline said more flight disruptions were
expected as it worked to “reposition aircraft and crews.” The ground stop
impacted both Alaska Air and Horizon Air flights, with officials asking travelers
to check their flight statuses before heading to the airport.
Hawaiian Airlines was not impacted by the technical issues. Alaska
Airlines released a statement early Friday morning:
Alaska Airlines operations have been restored after a
significant IT outage resulted in a system-wide ground stop of flights for
Alaska and Horizon. The ground stop was lifted at 11:30 p.m. Pacific. We are
working to get our operations back on track as quickly and safely as
possible.
Since this afternoon, we’ve had more than 229 flight
cancellations. Additional flight disruptions are likely as we reposition
aircraft and crews throughout our network.
We appreciate the patience of our guests whose travel
plans have been disrupted. We’re working to get them to their destinations as
quickly as we can. Before heading to the airport, we encourage flyers to check
their flight status. A flexible travel
policy is in place to support guests as operations return to normal following
an IT outage.
