American Airlines has launched a new initiative to unlock 35 million gallons of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) over the next three years in partnership with Google.
The record-breaking agreement is the largest of its kind between an airline and a single corporation and will result in 300,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) emissions reductions, according to the airline.
The sustainable fuel will be produced from waste feedstocks like used cooking oil and delivered to American at Chicago O’Hare International Airport.
Google will receive sustainable aviation fuel certificates to help address emissions from its employees’ business travel.
“Our industry-leading agreement with Google is a critical step forward in reducing emissions from our operations,” said American’s Chief Sustainability Officer Jill Blickstein. “By working with leaders like Google who share our commitment to innovation, we’re helping to grow demand for SAF and support the development of a stronger, more resilient market.”
The airline also said that the SAF initiative was made possible by Illinois officials, including Governor JB Pritzker and the Illinois General Assembly, which enacted an SAF tax credit.
