Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) is building its first new terminal in nearly 40 years, and American Airlines will be the new facility’s primary carrier.
The airport announced on Monday that it selected American to be the anchor airline for its forthcoming West Terminal.
“After completing months of careful analysis, the Aviation Department selected American Airlines as the anchor tenant for this new West Terminal,” said PHX Aviation Director Chad Makovsky. “We look forward to working with American and all airlines at Sky Harbor to ensure we deliver thoughtful, affordable and operationally efficient facilities that continue to elevate the passenger experience while ensuring we are well prepared to meet the region’s future air travel demands.”
American has operated out of PHX for nearly a century, and today it’s the airport’s largest carrier, with more than 300 peak daily departures and about 40% of the airport’s traffic.
Anchoring the new terminal is a chance for the carrier to further commit to the Phoenix market.
"Phoenix is a critical part of American's network, and we're excited to continue to invest in the airport and this region's future,” said American Airlines CEO Robert Isom. “We are proud to partner with the City of Phoenix and Sky Harbor on a vision that will support continued growth, create jobs, strengthen global connectivity and deliver an even better experience for our customers with much-needed new premium spaces.”
Details on Phoenix’s new West Terminal haven’t been released yet. The project is still in its early planning phases, and construction isn’t expected to begin on the new facility until at least 2029.
