The Federal Aviation Administration predicts that June 27 will be the year’s busiest travel day yet, with 53,677 scheduled flights. Delta Air Lines is scheduled to fly 5.8 million passengers from June 28 to July 7 this year.
Delta Air Lines CEO Ed Bastian discussed the summer holiday swing on CBS News June 26: “Memorial Day Weekend wasn’t that far from what we’re going to be flying Fourth of July Weekend. Our team’s doing an amazing job…This is our Super Bowl, Fourth of July. This is when we show up and we’re ready to go.
“The issues with Boeing have pretty much been centered on the MAX, and we do not fly the MAX. And we’re pretty well split between Boeing and Airbus. Years ago we used to be all Boeing, but we’ve been taking, the last couple of years, exclusively Airbus product,” explained Bastian. “Nothing against Boeing, we decided we liked the Airbus product well before the issues of the MAX ever arose.”
“I’m 100 percent confident in the Boeing fleet that we fly — we fly over 500 Boeing planes, thousands of times, every day. We know the product really well. With the new generation aircraft, the MAX, the 787, there have been significant sourcing issues, manufacturing issues. We’re waiting until we’re confident that everything is sorted out around the MAX before we consider bringing one of those onto our product.”
Delta Air Lines also debuted its first-ever Delta One Lounge in New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport today, a premium hub for relaxation and dining ahead of and after a Delta One flight.
