Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) is the first airport to be awarded the Universal Design Certification for the University at Buffalo’s Center for Inclusive Design and Environmental Access (IDEA Center).
Universal design is a design principle focusing on all aspects of the human experience, taking accessibility into consideration for all people as a building or space is being designed, from considering pregnant women and the elderly to children and the differently abled.
Universal design could range from Tokyo’s seamless transferring public buses, allowing those in wheelchairs or with limited mobility to easily use them, to providing nursing stations for women with infants in malls or airports.
The IDEA Center is a world leader in developing, evaluating and promoting include design practices. The certification evaluates spaces on seven principles, including equitable use, flexibility, perceptible information and intuitive operation. PIT received exceptional scores when it came to wayfinding, lighting, sensory inclusion and mobility access.
In addition to the new certification, PIT also participates in the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Program and provides nursing rooms, a sensory room and airport assistance for those who need them.

“Receiving Universal Design Certification from the IDEA Center is a tremendous honor,” said Siri Betts-Sonstegard, Senior Vice President, Experience & Design at PIT. “Our goal has always been to make Pittsburgh International Airport a place where everyone feels comfortable and capable of traveling independently. This recognition validates years of thoughtful planning, collaboration and innovation.”
Aligned with the new designation, Pittsburgh International Airport recently opened a newly redesigned Kids Play Area, offering a fun space for children to play before their flights.
“We continue to partner with organizations that will help us uphold PIT’s mission to redefine the airport experience for everyone,” said Betts-Sonstegard.
