United Airlines has provided new details regarding its ongoing global route network expansion, announcing three new international destinations and four new flights launching later this year.
On Thursday, the Chicago-based carrier revealed that it will be the only U.S. airline to offer nonstop flights to Marrakesh, Morocco and Cebu, Philippines and announced the first nonstop flight to Medellin, Colombia in its nearly 100-year history.
United will also increase its service to Hong Kong (starting October 26 from Los Angeles); Seoul, South Korea (starting October 25 from San Francisco) and Porto, Portugal (starting May 23 from Newark/New York) and add four weekly flights between Los Angeles and Shanghai (starting August 29) after U.S. and Chinese governments agreed to enhance connectivity between the two countries.
Cebu, Philippines
Starting July 31, United will offer new year-round, nonstop service from Japan's Tokyo-Narita International Airport to Mactan–Cebu International Airport in the Philippines with daily flights aboard Boeing 737-800 aircraft. Philippines-bound travelers coming from the U.S. can connect to Tokyo via United's flights from San Francisco, Los Angeles, Denver, Newark and Houston.
Currently, United is the only U.S. carrier to offer transpacific service to the Philippines with its daily flights between San Francisco and Manila.
The new Tokyo-Cebu route is available to book on the carrier's website and the United app.
Marrakesh, Morocco
Beginning October 24, United will be the only airline to directly connect the U.S. and Marrakesh when it launches new service from Newark Liberty International Airport just outside of New York City. The flight will operate three times weekly on Boeing 767-300ER aircraft featuring 46 United Polaris business class and 22 United Premium Plus seats.
The route will complement United's existing service to Accra, Ghana; Lagos, Nigeria and Cape Town and Johannesburg, South Africa.
Medellin, Colombia
United will make its nonstop debut in Medellin, Colombia starting October 27. The new daily service from Houston will operate aboard Boeing 737 aircraft. The carrier already offers service from Houston and Newark to the Colombian capital of Bogota.
"We have consistently been ahead of the curve in finding hidden gem destinations for our customers to explore and remain committed to providing the most unique slate of travel options for their adventures abroad," said Patrick Quayle, United's Senior Vice President of Global Network Planning and Alliances.
"With our leading global network and elevated inflight experience, United has become the airline of choice for discerning customers looking for experiences they can't have with any other carrier," he added.
United has set the bar for international offerings among U.S. carriers, offering nonstop service to as many as 134 international destinations across 67 countries.
