Officials from Boeing and Emirates have announced a new commitment to purchase 40 Boeing 787-10 Dreamliners, a deal valued at $15.1 billion.
Publicized during the 2017 Dubai Airshow, Emirates will use the new 787-10 Dreamliners to compliment their Boeing 777 fleet with a medium twin-aisle airplane that offers 25 percent better fuel efficiency per seat and emissions than the models it replaces.
The United Arab Emirates-based carrier will also become the first to receive the new Boeing 777X in 2020.
According to the United States Department of Commerce, the deal between Boeing and Emirates would support more than 75,000 direct and indirect American jobs.
"Emirates' orders today will be delivered from 2022, taking the airline well into the 2030s," Emirates chief executive Sheik Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum said in a statement. "Some of these will be replacements so that we maintain a young and efficient fleet, and others will power our future network growth. We see the 787 as a great complement to our 777 and A380 fleet, providing us with more flexibility to serve a range of destinations as we develop our global route network."
"It has always been Emirates' strategy to invest in the most advanced and efficient aircraft, and today's orders reflect that," Al Maktoum continued. "Today's announcement also speaks to our confidence in the future of aviation in the UAE and the region."
In total, Boeing has sold more than 1,275 Dreamliners to more than 65 customers so far; The deal with Emirates pushes the total number of new 787 orders this year to more than 180. Since deliveries began in 2011, Boeing has delivered more than 600 of the 787 planes.
"We are excited that Emirates has selected the Boeing 787-10 Dreamliner to power its fleet expansion and future growth," Boeing Commercial Airplanes CEO Kevin McAllister said in a statement.
"This is an airplane that will set a new benchmark for operating economics in the commercial aviation industry when it enters service next year. Emirates' endorsement of the 787 Dreamliner extends our long-standing partnership and will sustain many jobs in the United States."
