MSC Cruises will spend $273 million to upgrade its four Lirica-class ships over the next two years, adding nearly 200 cabins, a water park, new entertainment options and boutiques to each vessel.
The work will be done at Italy’s Fincantieri shipyards.
The new splash parks will feature a pathway of water features and water cannons. The onboard boutiques will be redecorated and enlarged, and a new perfumery will be added.
The Lirica-class ships were built between 2003 and 2005 at the STX yards in Saint-Nazaire, France. The 60,000-ton ships now carry 2,069 passengers, but after the renovations, will grow to 65,000 tons and accommodate 2,680 guests after getting 193 additional cabins. Fifty-nine new crew cabins also will be added.
“When our four Lirica-class ships return to the seas after a total of 38 weeks in dry dock, they will be entirely new ships with additional amenities and comfort for our travelers, allowing them to reach sophisticated and refined destinations around the world,” MSC Cruises’ CEO Gianni Onorato said during a press conference in Rome.
“The extensive renovations represent a huge investment, and reaffirms, once again, our company’s dedication to high standards, cutting-edge technology and continuous product innovation," Onorato said. "MSC Cruises’ ships are works of art in their own right. With these exciting upgrades to our fleet — already renowned for its unrivalled style and elegance — we will be even more competitive”.
The MSC Armonia will be the first in dry dock, from Aug. 31 to Nov. 17, 2014; followed by MSC Sinfonia Jan. 12-March 16, 2015; MSC Opera, May 2-July 4, 2015; and MSC Lirica, Aug 21-Nov. 9, 2015.
