For travelers who want to see the Northern Lights, Viking Cruises announced a new ocean cruise itinerary Wednesday that will transport passengers to Norway during the peak period for Aurora Borealis.
Starting in January 2019, the "In Search of the Northern Lights" voyage will sail between London, England, and Bergen, Norway, making Viking the first cruise line in the United States to offer a full-length itinerary in the Arctic Circle during the winter season.
The cruise will take place on the 930-passenger Viking Sky as part of a 13-day itinerary that will explore northern Europe. Travelers will visit seven destinations, including overnight stays in Tromso, Alta and Bergen.
The Northern Lights itinerary also includes the chance for passengers to experience the Aurora Borealis under the clear skies of Alta, visit the native Sami community of Maze, marvel at the Arctic Cathedral in Tromso, learn at the Archaeological Museum in Stavanger and view the region from Mt. Ulriken in Bergen.
"Our Nordic heritage is evident in all that we do, from our spirit of exploration to the serene, understated elegance of our ships. Scandinavia is Viking territory, and no other cruise line can show guests this part of the world like we can," Viking Cruises Chairman Torstein Hagen said in a statement.
"Norway's landscapes in the winter are truly magnificent, something few North Americans get to witness. I am pleased to offer this exclusive opportunity for our guests to explore my homeland."
