We’ve all seen the footage: happily drunk festival-goers wandering alongside rivers dyed green, large crowds gathering outside pubs and taverns and the general hubbub and fanfare of a holiday that’s largely become an excuse to drink to excess.

Yet that’s not quite the way we all want to celebrate St. Paddy’s Day. And when so much of what we see about the holiday is focused on consumption of alcohol, what do we do when we’re sober curious, are abstaining during Lent, or are staying away from alcohol due to health or other reasons?

Well, you’ve made it to the right place. While we in the United States might equate the holiday with leprechaun and shamrock decorations and excessive drinking, there’s a lot more to the holiday than just that, and more ways to enjoy it than with alcohol.

Visiting Ireland as a Sober Traveler

The best way to celebrate St. Paddy’s Day right—and without the alcohol—is by visiting Ireland over the holiday.

CIE Tours’ Ireland-based team often says, “the heart of Irish celebrations is storytelling and community; alcohol is incidental, not essential.

While St. Patrick’s Day is more about bar culture in the United States, it’s all about community and family in Ireland. Small towns offer individual celebrations, with local parades, traditional music and storytelling, Irish dancing and family get-togethers.

CIE’s tours often help travelers engage with the more meaningful side of the holiday, too: the celebration of the Christianization of Ireland, with trips to St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Dublin and Downpatrick in Northern Ireland.

Travelers can also enjoy the beginning of spring during St. Patrick’s Day holiday in Ireland, taking coastal walks along the scenic shore in Donegal or Sligo, exploring the verdant Midlands or taking in the views at the ever-famous Cliffs of Moher.

Tour operator Unforgettable Travel’s Ireland destination specialist, Chelsea Marquart, recommends travelers experience a traditional céilí, or Irish dance gathering, or live folk music session, visit a few of the country’s amazing museums, like the EPIC Museum in Dublin, and spend a day experiencing nature along the Wild Atlantic Way or at Killarney National Park.

Cruise the Irish Coastline

Sober-curious travelers might also consider cruising the Irish coastline with SeaDream Yacht Club.

The wellness-centric yacht-style cruise line offers a plant-based, raw-food menu, mocktails for sober travelers, and programming ranging from daily yoga to Tai Chi so that travelers can enjoy a healthy lifestyle onboard.

The line also offers some amazing Ireland itineraries, sailing the Wild Atlantic Way and visiting the Cliffs of Moher, Skellig Michael, Cork, Galway, and other major sites. Sailing along the coastline during St. Patrick’s Day provides travelers an opportunity to celebrate the holiday on their terms, without stopping at a pub for a pint.

Sober Celebrations in the U.S.

If you can’t visit Ireland to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day right, there are still some amazing experiences here in the United States for you to enjoy soberly.

O’Neill, Nebraska is considered the state’s Irish capital, home to a strong Irish heritage. On St. Paddy’s Day, the town is transformed into a wonderland for celebrants, complete with a large parade, the world’s largest painted shamrock, live entertainment, an Irish Walk of Fame induction and plenty of fun community events like a dodgeball tournament and an annual green eggs and ham breakfast for children.

Jonesborough, Tennessee, is home to a strong Appalachian culture rooted in Irish and Scottish heritage. There, travelers and residents can enjoy Highland games, traditional music and community celebrations. The Irish Festival at Bledsoe’s Fort Historical Park is an amazing event for adults and families alike, blending history and culture.

Columbia, Missouri, hosts a nationally recognized Irish music and travel experience for sober travelers (and those who enjoy a pint). This year, some sober highlights include The Kay Brothers’ Show on St. Patrick’s Day at The Blue Note, a historic venue in town, and Ireland with Michael Live on March 19, a PBS-backed performance by Broadway star Michael Londra, all centering around Ireland. The performance, complete with a traditional band, is sponsored by the Irish government.

Lastly, but certainly not least, is one Midwestern town’s St. Patrick’s Day celebrations.

New London, Wisconsin, is located about 40 miles west of Green Bay, and transforms itself into “New Dublin” every St. Patrick’s Day. Leprechauns transform the town’s signs each year for the weeklong event, and locals celebrate their roots with a fun Irish funeral parody, complete with mock procession, Irish caroling, Celtic music, and so much more. Even more exciting: it’s home to Wisconsin’s largest St. Patrick’s Day parade!
