Researchers working out of the University of Cambridge believe they have solved the mystery behind two stunning bronze works of art, stating that Michelangelo once made them.
The great news is that they would very much like you to come on by and have a look for yourself.
The New York Times' Christopher D. Shea reports, "A group of experts, including art historians based at the University of Cambridge, researchers at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and a professor of clinical anatomy from the University of Warwick, is claiming that two virile bronze figures mounted on panthers were sculpted by Michelangelo."
The discovery is truly remarkable in that the sculptures would be "the only known surviving bronzes by Michelangelo."
Dr. Victoria Avery of the Fitzwilliam Museum explains how researchers happened upon their breakthrough and why they wholeheartedly believe them to be the work of the famed Renaissance artist:
The Fitzwilliam Museum explains in detail more about the bronzes and their purported creator.
According to the release, the bronzes had long been thought to be the work of other artists. However, "That changed last autumn when Prof Paul Joannides, Emeritus Professor of Art History at the University of Cambridge, connected them to a drawing by one of Michelangelo's apprentices now in the Musée Fabre, Montpellier, France."
Seeing that drawing sparked the assumption that Michelangelo was preparing to bring the work from paper to full-fledged sculpture.
As echoed in the video, officials welcome all interested parties to take a gander at the beautiful work at the Fitzwilliam Museum, which offers free admission.
The museum proclaims, "The bronzes and a selection of the evidence are now on display in the Italian galleries at the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, from February 3 until 9 August 2015."
Now you might not leave with complete certainty regarding each bronze, but you will get something altogether astonishing.
The museum is offering a look at truly extraordinary works of art that come with the added intrigue of an ongoing mystery. Thanks to literature and evidence provided to the public, you can now conclude what you like all while appreciating amazing art.
