The world will finally get the Trivago Guy 2.0 it so desperately demanded.
CNN's Marnie Hunter reports Tim Williams, the actor featured in Trivago commercials, is about to get a fan-fueled makeover.
First, let's bring the uninitiated up to speed. Here is a commercial with Williams who looks slightly like Indiana Jones' less successful cousin:
The biggest gripe online seems to be the actor's disheveled look and lack of belt, which reminds us that it's a great thing nobody sees what we have in our own closet.
Well, overreact and you shall receive.
The travel website heard your pleas and launched a Facebook contest to dress their spokesperson, also launching the hashtag #trivagoGuy, proving that a viral marketing campaign sometimes drops into your lap.
If your makeover is selected, you could win a five-day trip to Berlin, where you will see a future commercial for the German travel company.
Now you would think the 48-year-old actor would be fairly grumpy about being called out for his looks. He is taking it all with a great sense of humor, especially when you consider his current outfit was selected by someone else.
Williams had this to say to CNN: "I had a belt on at one point, and it just didn't kind of go with the outfit and we scrapped the belt. It's probably one of the best decisions we ever came up with because look what it's created."
What it's created is a boon in interest for Trivago and their scruffy star.
We will have to wait until after Aug. 28 (submissions accepted until Aug. 24) to see what a streamlined Williams might look like. Thankfully, this is the perfect time to play with some new fashion.
Hunter reports the stumble and traces of facial hair came from Williams' other endeavor, playing a rock star on a German soap opera.
Hunter writes, "That role is actually the reason for the semi-shaven, tousled coiffure of the Trivago ad. On the show he had longer hair and a goatee, so he had to retain some of that to be ready for his rock star role, complete with goatee, a week after shooting the ad."
Now remember, it's that special beauty inside that matters, unless you are paid to pitch for an online travel company, it seems.
