Which Emoji Do Travelers Think Represents Your State?

When sharing their travels over social media, many tourists like to ditch the written word in favor of emojis to express how they're feeling about their journey.

Thanks to Hotwire.com, the company has compiled a state-by-state guide to the top travel and leisure emojis used by people on Twitter. The data offers a light-hearted look at what consumers across the United States are feeling as the peak holiday travel season approaches.

Hotwire Travel Editor Carrie Peters commented on the findings, saying, "Since holiday travel gets such a bad rap, we are thrilled to see so many travelers enjoying their travel experiences leading up to the busy holiday season. We've known all along that travel experiences increase happiness, and now there are almost 600,000 travel emojis available to bring that idea to life."

There is no shortage of entertainment with this survey, either, as each state is represented by an emoji. From the "tropical drink" in Hawaii to the "Martini Glass" in Connecticut, it's interesting to see what people are tweeting across the country.

Several of the emojis are exactly what you would expect. With California's emoji being a sun, Louisiana's being a jazz horn, Indiana's being a basketball and Oregon's being an umbrella, tourists in those areas are following the trends.

As for states that have an emoji that doesn't immediately come to mind, try to decipher a green heart for North Dakota, donuts for Maine, apples for New Jersey and even a cup of coffee for Pennsylvania. Not the emojis I would have chosen, but to each their own.

Another observation is that America loves its booze. Minnesota, Virginia and Vermont all have beer representations, Wisconsin loves its wine and Connecticut has the cocktail emoji. As for Nevada, the top emoji is a slot machine, but they are usually followed up with either happy or sad emojis. I've been there before.

Wherever you're from and wherever you're traveling for the holidays, let this emoji survey remind you to not take everything so serious. The holidays are about family and friends, so lighten up and enjoy yourself.
