Despite a dip in September traffic, Mexico's Grupo Posadas hospitality company said it expects to end 2017 with a double-digit growth over its 2016 performance.
Enrique Calderón, the Vice President of Hotel Operation for Grupo Posadas, which includes such leading brands as Live Aqua, Fiesta Americana, Fiesta Inn and One Hoteles, said that October has already shown signs of recovery and there is a "positive outlook" for November and December, according to Reportur.mx.
The numbers are good news for Mexico's tourism industry after the nation suffered a difficult September, during which it experienced two deadly earthquakes, one in Mexico City and another off the southern coast, near Oaxaca.
A rough hurricane season also impacted travel to Mexico. In particular, said Calderón, the closure of airports in Houston and Miami, both important feeder airports for travelers to Mexico, further compounded a decline in numbers during the late summer, early autumn seasons.
While several Posadas properties did close due to storms hitting Mexico, none suffered any damage, and all were fully open and operating normally within two days of the storms' passing.
"We started working fast, and the impact in October was lower, so for November and December we see a positive outlook," said Calderón.
Helping boost Grupo Posadas visibility is the recent announcement that 75 of the brand's properties have earned Green Key badges in recognition of their "sustainable practices in tourist establishments." This recognition was given by "The Foundation for Environmental Education" (FEE), an international non-governmental and non-profit organization that promotes sustainable development.
Each hotel had to undergo a rigorous evaluation in 13 categories such as environmental management, staff participation, social responsibility, green activities and administration to earn the award. Company-wide, Grupo Posadas said it has instituted a coordinated effort encompassing training, operation, maintenance and regulation.
"[This recognition makes] Mexico and Posadas world leaders in terms of sustainability in the tourism industry," said Pablo Azcárraga, Chairman of the Board of Directors for Grupo Posadas.
