Puerto Vallarta is known as one of the top cities in the world to visit, and it shows in both hotel occupancy and its strong visitor numbers.
The city set a new record for hotel occupancy in 2017 and is making big plans for the coming year.
Puerto Vallarta, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary, had an occupancy rate of 75.6 percent in 2017 with more than 3 million arrivals landing at its international airport.
Visitors from the U.S. make up the largest percentage of travelers arriving in the city. More than 50 percent of airport arrivals come from the States, followed by 15.6 percent arriving from Canada. National arrivals make up just over 30 percent of visitor arrivals to Puerto Vallarta.
Travelers heading from Puerto Vallarta generally come from the West. The biggest feeder cities are Los Angeles, Dallas, Seattle, Calgary and Vancouver.
Puerto Vallarta also welcomed nearly 300,000 cruise passengers in 2017 with 145 cruise ships calling at the port.
The city is gearing up for a successful 2018, welcoming the travel trade to its Gala Puerto Vallarta-Riviera Nayarit event, which is taking place through February 13, 2018.
The event, now in its 24th year, is a proven way for hoteliers and tour operators in Puerto Vallarta and the Riviera Nayarit to promote and grow their businesses.
This year, more than 95 hotels from both destinations and 500 travel professionals are participating in the event.
"Gala Puerto Vallarta-Riviera Nayarit is the place for business and deals to be made," said Javier Aranda Pedrero, general director of the Puerto Vallarta Tourism Board. "This is where rates are set for 30,000 plus hotel rooms located in the region for the upcoming season. The economic impact of the work we do at Gala is a benefit for all of us in Puerto Vallarta."
