April proved to be another hectic month for travel, as the partial government shutdown, ongoing conflict in the Middle East, and the resulting heightened fuel prices continue to create uncertainty heading into the peak summer travel season.

Through it all, the U.S. State Department has been assessing threats to travelers venturing abroad and has published a handful of updated travel advisories for destinations around the globe in recent weeks.

Here's a recap of the most noteworthy travel advisory updates from the past month.

Nigeria - Level 3

The U.S. State Department continues to recommend Americans reconsider travel to Nigeria due to a plethora of potential threats, including crime, terrorism, unrest, kidnapping and inconsistent availability of health care services.

Areas to avoid entirely include Borno, Jigawa, Kogi, Kwara, Niger, Plateau, Taraba, Yobe and northern Adamawa states due to terrorism, crime and kidnapping, as well as Bauchi, Gombe, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Sokoto and Zamfara states due to unrest, crime and kidnapping.

Officials also advise travelers to steer clear of Nigeria's Abia, Anambra, Bayelsa, Delta, Enugu, Imo and Rivers states (with the exception of Port Harcourt) due to crime, kidnapping and unrest.

Oman - Level 3

On April 9, the U.S. State Department updated its Level 3 travel advisory for Oman due to the ongoing U.S. war on Iran in the Middle East. "Reconsider travel to Oman due to the risk of terrorism and armed conflict. Some areas have increased risk," officials reiterated, advising travelers to avoid the Yemen border region.

Bermuda - Level 1

Bermuda remains a safe travel destination heading into the peak summer season, receiving a Level 1 advisory from the U.S. State Department as of April 10.

Barbados - Level 1

A Caribbean hotspot, Barbados offers a safe escape in 2026, based on the latest travel guidance from the U.S. State Department.

"Petty crime is common, especially in popular tourist locations. Stay aware of your surroundings," the April 10 update notes. "Most crimes against foreigners are crimes of opportunity, like purse snatching and pickpocketing."

Trinidad and Tobago - Level 3

Just southwest of Barbados, the dual-island Caribbean country of Trinidad and Tobago continues to be listed at Level 3 this spring, with the U.S. State Department warning of potential crime and a heightened risk of terrorism.

Travelers are advised to reconsider their visit after the local government issued a new nationwide State of Emergency in March.

"Although violent crime in Trinidad and Tobago has dropped greatly since 2024 due to security efforts started during the previous state of emergencies, crime remains a challenge throughout the country," the April 13 update states. "Crime rates are lower in Tobago than in Trinidad."

Hungary - Level 1

Hungary continues to receive a Level 1 travel advisory from the U.S. State Department, with the European country described as "generally a safe destination for travelers."

"Most crimes against foreigners are crimes of opportunity, like purse snatching and pickpocketing, especially in tourist areas and major train stations in Budapest," the April 15 update states. "This includes passport theft on the trains between Budapest, Vienna and Bratislava."

Haiti - Level 4

The State Department reissued its Level 4 travel advisory for Haiti on April 16, reminding Americans to avoid travel to the Caribbean country due to crime, terrorism, kidnapping, unrest and limited health care.

Haiti has been under a national state of emergency since March 2024 and U.S. commercial flights are not currently operating to or from Port-au-Prince, officials warn.
