It's been more than a month since Hurricane Maria devastated Puerto Rico, but the island is in full recovery mode.
While much of the territory remains without power, Meet Puerto Rico president and CEO Milton Segarra recently revealed the local government has made positives steps over the last several weeks from a tourism industry perspective.
Puerto Rico has welcomed an increasing number of cruise ships, which are returning to the island. More popular tourist destinations are reopening. Hotels and resorts are once again accepting new reservations and the capital of San Juan was named one of the World's Top 10 Cities for Travel in 2018 by Lonely Planet.
Some of the attractions which have already reopened on the Caribbean island include the Bacardi Welcome Center, Plaza Las America's and the Mall of San Juan. Several watersports venues are also expected to reopen before the end of December.
The Puerto Rico Tourism Company has compiled a list of opening dates for hotels in the area, with generator power keeping the lights on at many of the resorts. The tourism bureau also reported San Juan's cruise port and Luis Munoz Marin International Airport are both fully operational.
Additionally, the Puerto Rico Convention Center will resume its schedule of conventions in January, starting with The Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association's Caribbean Travel Marketplace, running between January 30 and February 1.
The Meet Puerto Rico team will continue interacting with the industry and media on a consistent basis with the intent of listening for input on new ideas, approaches and commitments as the island continues to rebuild following a brutal hurricane season.
For those still looking to help Puerto Rico as it continues to recover, the tourism bureau has provided a link to United for Puerto Rico sponsored by the First Lady of Puerto Rico, Beatriz Rossello.
