While you can try your best to deny it, the calendar flipping over to August means the days of pure summer fun are on the wane. But don't let the Back to School sales and Pumpkin Spice Creep get you down: there are still plenty of great summer events happening in August and the following are just a sample. From state fairs and their tasty food to a myriad of outdoor food festivals, theater happenings, rodeos, balloon & kite flying fiestas, surf events and dozens more, as you'll see, the end of summer doesn't have to be the end of the fun for you and your crew. Alabama

Downtown Russellville will be the place to be on August 16-17 as the small town's world-famous Watermelon Festival returns. This beloved event promises heaps of watermelon-themed fun, alongside some sensational live music. Head over to Eutaw for the 49th Annual Black Belt Folk Roots Festival (August 24-25), where you will be able to get a true taste of western Alabama's rich culture through crafters, soulful musicians, dancers, storytellers, and food vendors. Birmingham will be buzzing on the same weekend as The 21st Annual Taste of 4th Avenue Jazz Festival (August 24) returns to entertain the crowds.

Alaska

Summer might be winding down for most of us, but in Alaska, the locals know how to squeeze out every last drop of fun. Start the month with a splash in Ninilchik at Salmonfest (August 2-4), an event dedicated to supporting local waters and the fish that call them home. This year's lineup is stacked, featuring Michael Franti & Spearhead, Dawes, The Devil Makes Three and more. Then, head to Seward for the 69th Annual Silver Salmon Derby from August 10-18, where anglers compete for glory and big catches. Kickstart your autumn foodie adventures in Flagstaff with the 40th Annual Route 66 Chili Cook-Off on August 3-4, where you will be able to sample a smorgasbord of sensational chilis. On the same dates, Prescott will host its Fine Art Festival, featuring over 100 art vendors and live art demonstrations. Later in the month, don’t miss the 36th Annual Arizona Cowboy Poets Gathering (August 8-10) in Prescott, where cowboy culture and poetry come together in a uniquely entertaining blend. Finally, Flagstaff will celebrate the rich traditions of the Hopi at the Hopi Arts & Cultural Festival on August 24.

You'll have a "seed-spitting good time" at the 48th Annual Hope Watermelon Festival from August 8-10. This festival promises a carnival-like atmosphere packed with unique events like the Watermelon Olympics and the Watermelon Idol talent contest. Later in August, head to Mount Nebo State Park for the 77th Annual Mount Nebo Chicken Fry (August 17), where all in attendance are promised a day of "chicken, pickin', and politickin'" to raise money for local groups. Then, wrap up your summer festivities in Hot Springs at the 7th Annual Baseball Weekend (August 23-24), where you can celebrate the city’s pivotal role in the birth of the Spring Training and meet icons like Johnny Bench and Ted Simmons.

Start your month at the 7th Annual Eureka Street Art Festival (runs through August 2), an event that transforms the town with stunning murals and vibrant street art or head to Santa Barbara for its Old Spanish Fiesta Days (runs through August 4) where you experience a parade, rodeo, livestock show, mariachi and mouthwatering Mexican-American cuisine, all in an ode to the city's heritage. This festival is a true fiesta for the senses!. Swap your wine & cheese for wine and chamber music at the 30th Music in the Vineyards Festival in Napa Valley (August 2-25), then catch some waves and watch epic competitions at the 61st Annual International Surfing Festival in Redondo Beach, which runs through August 4. Colorado

The beloved Vail Dance Festival will run through August 5—once again showcasing sensational dance performances alongside a remarkable Rocky Mountain backdrop—while up in Boulder, the annual Shakespeare Festival will present the works of The Bard live through August 11. Down in Telluride, the 47th Annual Telluride Jazz Festival will take place on August 9-11 and the local peaches will be celebrated in Palisade during the Palisade Peach Festival on August 16-17.  

Connecticut

Head to Hartford's Bushnell Park on Monday nights through August 12 to experience the city's famous Paul Brown Monday Night Jazz event, which is a special summer tradition in these parts. August also sees the Podunk Bluegrass Festival make its return to Goshen on August 8-11, with artists like Del McCoury Band, John McEuen & The Circle Band, Della Mae, and Nick Chandler all scheduled to perform. 

Delaware

The adored Rehoboth Beach Bandstand Summer Concert Series will continue on weekends all month long with artists ranging in genres from surf and 70s to yacht rock and folk rock. In the town of Wyoming, the Peach Festival (think peach dessert contest alongside arts & crafts) will take place on August 3. Elsewhere, the Riverfront Summer Concert Series will entertain the crowds in Wilmington on Thursday nights all month long and the Freeman Arts Pavilion in Selbyville sees artists like Air Supply, Grace Potter, Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Melissa Etheridge & Indigo Girls, Old Crow Medicine Show and many more perform. 

Florida

Start August in style at the International Ballet Festival in Miami, which will bring together impressive companies from all over the world (runs through August 11). Way down south, the 27th Annual Key West Lobsterfest will hold its usual array of crustacean-filled fun (think concerts, pub crawls and plenty of lobster tasting) on August 8-11. in Fort Lauderdale, the Miami Beach Kizomba Festival (August 22-26) will showcase the music & dance of multiple African nations and for a sweet finale to August, head to St. Petersburg on August 24 for the 13th Annual Great St. Pete Cupcake Contest.

Georgia

Food Lovers will want to head to Lake Mayer Park in Savannah for the mouthwatering flavors of the Southeast Crab Feast on August 3, before heading to Atlanta for Black Restaurant Week, which will run August 4-18.  Anyone in the mood for a traditional old-fashioned fair should head to the Georgia Mountain Fair in Hiawassee (August 16-24), where you can end summer on a high note with rides, music and all-around good times. 

Hawai'i

Kick-off August on Kauai at the Waipa Music & Mango Festival (August 9) before heading over to O'ahu for Duke's Oceanfest—the Aloha State's most beloved ocean sports festival—which returns on August 16-25. At this event, the legacy of the "father of surfing" Duke Kahanamoku is celebrated with gusto on the shores of Waikiki. Also on O'ahu, the 20th Annual Korean Festival will take place in Honolulu on August 2-3, celebrating the music, food, dance and culture of Korea.

Idaho

August is synonymous with the Festival at Sandpoint in these parts and the always-popular event comes to a finish this month with a series of great concerts (Lee Brice, Jason Mraz, Colbie Caillat and Gavin DeGraw among others) and a grand finale on August 4 featuring a screening of How To Drain Your Dragon accompanied by live music. In southern Idaho, the Sun Valley Music Festival returns through August 22, combining sensational classical music with spectacular settings. 

Illinois

River City Soul Fest returns to Peoria on August 3, featuring performances by Musiq Soulchild & special guest Keke Wyatt. The eighth month is an amazing time to be in Chicago as Lollapalooza returns to Grant Park on August 1-5 with headliners Megan Thee Stallion, SZA, Hozier, The Killers and Blink-182 plus dozens more acts. The park also plays host to the classical sounds of the Grant Park Music Festival through August 17, the same weekend Floatzilla—a party dedicated to paddling—takes place in Rockford (August 16-17).

Indiana

Once again, Indianapolis will be the place to be for the all-American fun of the Indiana State Fair (August 2-18 except for Mondays). In addition to a myriad of carnival rides, agricultural exhibits, rodeos, demolition derbies and more mouthwatering food items than you can shake a fork at, the fair will also feature free concerts from the likes of Bell Biv DeVoe, Yolanda Adams, Lita Ford, Sublime with Rome and more in addition to a celebration of The Beatles and their appearance at the fair in 1964. Outside of Indy, Fort Wayne will be a fantastic spot to be this month as the city will celebrate Latino and Hispanic culture at the Fiesta Fort Wayne on August 10 and host the Taste of the Arts Festival on August 24.  

Iowa

Head straight for Davenport for the Mississippi Valley Fair (runs through August 4), which will celebrate its 105th edition with scores of family fun events, tasty food and concerts from acts like T-Pain, Thomas Rhett, Bret Michaels and more. Down in Des Moines, the biggest event of the year will run August 8-18: The Iowa State Fair. There aren't enough superlatives to describe this iconic gathering, but let's just say that it's the best of the state distilled down into one awesome event. Insta-worthy fair food, awesome rides, agricultural events and concerts from the likes of Jelly Roll, Brett Young, The Beaches, Motley Crue, Ne-Yo and more highlight this year's happenings. Last but not least, the small town of Danbury will hold its annual Corn Days celebration on August 23-25. 

Kansas

Start your month off down in Dodge City, where the West is still wild and Dodge City Days will run through August 4 with its usual array of rodeos, concerts, parades and lip-smackingly good food. In Liberal, the famous Five State Fair will bring fun for the whole family to town on August 7-11. And in the town of Winfield, Duck Jam will return on August 8 with a performance by King Cabbage Brass Band. Last but not least, the KC Pumpkin Patch in Olathe will host the KC Sunflower Fest (various dates August -25), offering up lots of fun in fields of snap-worthy sunflowers. 

Kentucky

Kick off your Kentucky August in Covington—across the Ohio River from Cincinnati—at Glier's Goettafest on August 1-4, which will toast the region's favorite meaty specialty. Danville will celebrate its rich African American history at the Soul of 2nd Street Festival on August 9-10 while Newport will be the setting for the Great Inland Seafood Festival on August 15-18, an event that offers up the chance to sample sensational seafood, great brews and listen to solid tunes. Elsewhere, the Kentucky State Fair will bring food & music tents, talent shows, rides and much more to Louisville on August 15-25. 

Louisiana

Pay respect to the legend of Louis Armstrong during the Satchmo Summerfest in New Orleans, featuring two days of great jazz music and mouthwatering local food (August 3-4). Head to Delcambre during the middle of the month for the 72nd Annual Delcambre Shrimp Festival (August 14-18) for a party dedicated to the region's shrimping heritage and the Gueydan Duck Festival (August 22-25) will toast the town's reputation as the "Duck Capital of America'' with live music, great food, duck calling contests and much more. 

Maine

One of the most beloved summer festivals on the Eastern Seaboard, the Maine Lobster Festival returns to Rockland with its signature five days of fun and feasting on fantastic lobster (runs through August 4). Up north, the Bangor State Fair will take place on August 1-3 and feature the usual array of Mainer culinary delights, rides and entertainment. Finally, celebrate Maine's state fruit at the Blueberry Festival in Machias on August 16-18, where you'll be able to sample plenty of berry-filled foodie delights. 

Maryland

Kick off your month in the cool small town of Berlin at the Peach Festival (August 3), then head to the Haitian Caribbean Festival in Baltimore on August 11.  Finish off your August with a trip back in time at the Maryland Renaissance Festival (located near Annapolis), which kicks off its 48th season on August 24 (select dates through October 20). 

Massachusetts

In Boston, the always-popular Shakespeare on the Common event will run through August 2 with performances of The Winter's Tale under the stars. Also in Beantown, the 54th Annual Chinatown August Moon Festival (August 11) will feature Chinese music, lion dancing, martial arts and arts & crafts. Later in the month, Provincetown will party during Carnival (August 17-24) and the 14th Annual Boston Jazz Fest (August 30-31) will bring the sultry sounds of jazz to town. 

Michigan

The Blue Water Sand Sculpture Festival will impress the crowds in Port Huron on August 2-4 and the season will also be celebrated with gusto through August 4 at the 100th Annual Coast Guard Festival in Grand Haven, where the men and women of the Coast Guard are honored with days full of fun happenings (think cardboard boat races, concerts and tons of great food & drink). Another great event in "The Mitten" this month is the National Blueberry Festival in South Haven (August 8-11). 

Minnesota

Start your month in Minneapolis at the 31st Annual Fringe Festival (August 1-11), which will once again present a solid line-up of shows. The big one is the Minnesota State Fair, which kicks off in St. Paul on August 22 (runs through September 2) and is set to delight the crowds with its usual array of mouthwatering food (try the deep-fried Ranch dressing and dill pickle tots!), A-list concerts (Chance The Rapper, Blake Shelton, Matchbox Twenty, and Ludacris & T-Pain) and fun for the whole family. Last but not least, the beloved Barnesville Potato Days festival will take place on August 23-24. 

 

Mississippi

It shouldn't be a surprise that a town called Water Valley would be famed for its Watermelon Carnival (think parades, fireworks and lots of melon-filled fun), and this year's event takes place on August 2-3. In Clarksdale, the annual Sunflower Blues & Gospel Festival will take the stage on August 8-11. 

Missouri

Start your month in Sikeston at the 72nd Annual Jaycee Bootheel Rodeo (August 7-10), where rodeo action combines with great live music for an unforgettable summer event. Springfield will once again rev up its engines for the Birthplace of Route 66 Festival (August 8-10), a gathering that features a parade, classic cars, a talent show and various Route 66 exhibits. There isn't a better combination of music and setting than the one offered at the Blues at the Arch Festival, which will see great blues music belted out under the Gateway Arch in St. Louis (August 9-10) and Festival of the Little Hills—one of the Midwest's premier arts & crafts festivals—returns to St. Charles on August 16-18. 

Montana

Get yourself to the Montana State Fair (runs through August 3) in Great Falls for days full of arts & crafts, horse racing, carnival rides and agricultural competitions and nights full of top-notch entertainment from the likes of Boys Like Girls, 3OH3!, Bush, Starship, Foghat and Newsboys. Then, bounce to Billings and the Montana Fair (an unrelated event to the Montana State Fair, taking place on August 9-17) for lots of great family-friendly fun and concerts from Kip Moore, Quiet Riot and more. For a celebration of all things Western lifestyle, head to the 39th Annual Montana Cowboy Poetry Gathering and Western Music Rendezvous (August 8-11) in Lewiston. 

Nebraska

Everybody's favorite "smiley" summer drink will be celebrated once again in the town of Hastings at the 26th Annual Kool-Aid Days (August 16-18). That same weekend sees Omaha host the 18th Annual Nebraska Balloon & Wine Festival (August 16-17) and the Omaha Greek Festival (August 15-17). End your summer with a bang at the Nebraska State Fair, which kicks off on August 23 in Grand Isle, bringing its usual array of all-American fun with a Cornhusker State twist to town. 

Nevada

Once again, rock & roll and classic cars will take over Reno during Hot August Nights (August 4-11), a beloved summer tradition in the region. Elsewhere, the Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival will run through August 25 and the one-of-a-kind Burning Man happening commences on August 25. 

New Hampshire

Blues fans will want to make a beeline for Thornton and the White Mountain Boogie N' Blues Festival on August 16-18, where a range of fine artists will take the stage. Down on the coast, Hampton Beach will hold its annual Children's Week on August 12-16—featuring a fun array of kid-centric events like magic & puppet shows, storytellers, free ice cream, a parade and much more.

New Jersey

New Mexico

Then, for the ultimate family-friendly experience, head down to Deming for the 45th Annual Great American Duck Races (August 22-25), which will see, well, races between ducks and lots of family-friendly fun. 

New York

There's no better event this month than the Great New York State Fair in Syracuse (August 21 - September 2), which is easily the biggest annual party in the Empire State. Once again, it will feature the usual array of fair food, rides, exhibits and A-list concerts from the likes of Megan Moroney, Stephen Sanchez, Flo Rida and many more. End your month at the Afropunk Festival in Brooklyn on August 23-24—featuring Erykah Badu—or at the 178th Annual Dutchess Fair in Rhinebeck on August 2025, an event full of Upstate-style fun. Last but not certainly not least, whether you prefer drummies or flats, you'll have a blast at the National Buffalo Wing Festival (August 31 - September 1)at Highmark Stadium, the Home of the Buffalo Bills. Naturally, there will be wing-eating contests but also sauce competitions, live entertainment and much more. 

North Carolina

There's no better way to start your August in the Tar Heel State than by swinging by Murfreesboro for the 39th Annual NC Watermelon Festival (runs through August 3), which will once again be the place to be for wonderful food (much more than watermelon fyi), great entertainment, fireworks and the Watermelon Festival Parade. On the Outer Banks, the Ocracoke Fig Festival will take place on August 2-3 and Nags Head will hold its annual Pirate Festival on August 7-8.

North Dakota

The 68th Annual Home On The Range Champions Ride (August 3) will once again take place in Sentinel Butte, bringing together the best saddle bronc riders to compete for the championship. Elsewhere, the Off The Charts Music Festival takes place in Cavalier on August 17-18 and Happy Harry's Hot Valley Nights returns to East Grand Forks on August 16-17 with sets from Phil Vassar, Mark Willis, Craig Morgan and more.  

Ohio

Why wait for St. Patrick's Day to celebrate Irish culture? Head to Dublin, Ohio on August 2-4 for a three-day extravaganza of Irish music, dance and spirits. Or, spend those days seeing doubles in Twinsburg at the annual Twins Day celebration, which is the largest gathering of twins in the world. Elsewhere, The Western & Southern Open—the biggest tennis summer ticket in America not named the U.S. Open—takes place in Cincinnati on August 11-19, Columbus plays host to the Festival Latino on August 10-11 and in Cleveland, August 17 is the date for the Lakewood Wing Crawl. 

Oklahoma

First and foremost, no summer in Oklahoma City is complete without a visit to Prix de West—America's premier Western art exhibition—at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum (runs through August 4). In Tulsa, the Greenwood Film Festival (August 4-9) will present through-provoking & empowering films while Edmond will host its VIBES monthly art experience on August 1. Later in the month, make for Muskogee to watch colorful balloons float overhead at the Oklahoma Festival of Ballooning (August 23-25). 

Oregon

Start your August with some seriously good jazz at the Vanport Jazz Festival (August 2-3 in Portland, then head out to Happy Valley for the Pickathon (August 1-4) for a gathering like no other that combines music, literature, culture, comedy, drinks and wellness. Later in the month, Rose City hosts Portland Hip Hop Week (August 20-26) and the Oregon State Fair kicks off in Salem (August 23 - September 2), bringing its usual array of quintessential "fair fun" in addition to concerts from the likes of Goo Goo Dolls, Yung Gravy, Ludacris, Daya and more. 

Pennsylvania

There's no better way to begin the month than by attending the BlackStar Film Festival (August 1-4) in Philadelphia, an event that will once again shine a light on film from the African diaspora and global societies of color. August in the Keystone State means Musikfest (August 2-11) and this concert event in Bethlehem is back and better than ever with performances by Greta Van Fleet, Sugar Ray, Better Than Ezra, Shinedown, Old Dominion, Black Eyed Peas and many more. Elsewhere, Barrel & Flow Fest (the first festival dedicated to black brewers) takes place in Pittsburgh on August 10 and last but not least, baseball fans will want to make a beeline for South Williamsport for the Little League World Series (August 14-25). 

Rhode Island

This year, August will be all about celebrating the 70th anniversary of the state's favorite music gathering: The Newport Jazz Festival (August 2-4. Elsewhere in the Ocean State, the Charlestown Seafood Festival will treat taste buds on August 2-4 and Providence will play host to the Dominican Festival & Parade of Rhode Island on August 11. Back in Newport, the 41st Annual Black Ships Festival (August 16-18) will toast the friendship and cultural ties between the U.S. and Japan through arts, culture and lots of great food. 

South Carolina

In Greenville, the South Carolina New Play Festival returns for a second year on August 8-11, celebrating all aspects of theater. Beer From Here local beer fest returns to the South Carolina Aquarium in Charleston on August 22 and South Carolina Black Pride will take place in Columbia on August 18-25 and the Upper South Carolina State Fair kicks off in Greenville on August 29 (runs through September 8). 

South Dakota

Let's just get the big one out of the way first: the Black Hills will once again be alive with the rumble of motorcycles during the 84th Annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally (August 2-11). In addition to organized rides, pub crawls, bike shows and tattoo contests, the festival will host great live music from acts like Jelly Roll, Kid Rock, Bret Michaels and more. Elsewhere, Clark will hold its annual Potato Days Festival on August 2-4 and the Corn Palace Festival will bring a state fair-type atmosphere to Mitchell on August 21-25, with the official South Dakota State Fair kicking off in Huron on August 28.

Tennessee

If you’re a fan of The King, then make your way to Memphis for Elvis Week at Graceland (August 9-17), which will see a return of the concerts, film screenings, conversations and candlelight vigils that make the event so special. Head for Murfreesboro on August 10 for the sweet return of the Peach Cobbler Festival and circle back to Nashville on August 17 for the Black Arts Bash at Cheekwood, which will feature dance, music, visual art, spoken word and more.

Texas

You have until August 3 to catch the live performances of TEXAS: The Outdoor Musical at Palo Duro Canyon State Park, which is the same date as the 40th Annual Bill Pickett Invitational Rodeo in Fort Worth, which will once again pay tribute to black cowboys (August 3). Get a head start on Halloween in Houston at the Houston Horror Film Festival (August 9-11) and head back to H-Town to celebrate Mexican culture at the 5th Annual Mariachi Festival (August 23-25). 

Utah

A pie-eating contest, pancake breakfast, parade and much more are set to return to Garden City during Raspberry Days (August 1-3) while Snowbird Ski Resort will be cutting the ribbon on a new season of Oktoberfest celebrations on August 10 (various dates through October 13). In Moab, music will once again be in concert with the landscape during the remarkable Moab Music Festival, which will see classical concerts take place in stunning natural locations surrounding the town (August 28 - September 14).  

Vermont

Start your month in southern Vermont at the 16th Annual Deerfield Valley Blueberry Festival, which will run through August 4. Elsewhere, the waters of Lake Champlain will come alive during the Lake Champlain Dragon Boat Festival on August 4—featuring a range of fun on the water for a good cause— and at the Shelburne Museum near Burlington, the beloved Ben and Jerry’s Concerts on the Green continues its season with a solid roster of performers like Joe Russo's Almost Dead (August 1). Finally, the Green Mountain Bluegrass & Roots Festival will rock Manchester on August 15-18. 

Virginia

The iconic Shenandoah Valley Music Festival continues with four shows in August: Atlanta Rhythm Section and Orleans (August 16), The Oak Ridge Boys (August 17), The High Kings and Eileen Ivers & The Brigideens (August 30) and Mavis Staples (August 31). If you've got a hankering for some good old-fashioned all-American fun, then head to the 75th Annual Prince William County Fair on August 9-17. Elsewhere in the Old Dominion, the 41st Annual Waterfront Jazz Festival will take place on August 16-17  in Norfolk. 

Washington

You can't talk about August in the Evergreen State without a mention of Seafair in Seattle, which will feature Fleet Week (runs through August 4) and the Boeing Seafair Air Show (August 2-4), but there's lots going on outside the city, too. Tacoma hosts the Native American Festival on August 10, The Whidbey Plein Air Paint Out art event takes place in Coupeville on August 12-15 and the Washington State International Kite Festival takes place in Long Beach on August 19-25. 

West Virginia

The town of Romney is the best place to be at the start of the month as the annual Peach Festival returns (August 2-3), bringing with it live music, games, arts & crafts, the Annual Peach Pageant, car & motorcycle shows and more peach ice cream than you can shake a scoop at. The treasured tradition that is the West Virginia State Fair returns August 8-17, with the usual array of sensational rides, great food, agricultural displays & contests and great live music from the likes of Lil Jon, Seether, Turnpike Troubadours, Travis Tritt and more. Finally, Mountaineer Brewfest returns to Wheeling with great beer for a good cause on August 17.

There may not be a better one-two summer punch than the Badger State's combination of Summerfest in July and the Wisconsin State Fair in August (runs August 1-11). In addition to all the classic carnival rides, agricultural exhibits & competitions and out-of-this-world food, concerts will include TLC, Brothers Osborne, Riley Green, Lauren Daigle and many more. Other sensational events this month include the 21st Annual Sugar Maple Festival—an annual Americana music gathering in Madison— on August 2-3, Bluegrass in the Pines in Rosholt (August 22-24) and the always-fun Sweet Corn Festival in Sun Prairie (August 14-18).

Start your August with a swing by the 111th Annual Fremont County Fair in Roverton (runs through August 3), where all in attendance can experience a Cowboy State-style good time, or head to the Wild West Balloon Fest on August 2 in Cody. In Jackson Hole, the Grand Teton Music Festival's 63rd season will run through August 17 and feature evenings of exquisite classical music, while the Cheyenne Arts Celebration will return to South Lions Park on August 10 for a day of art, music, food and much more.  Jackson Hole also has Yoga on the Trail throughout the month.
