From events celebrating the colorful foliage of the season to Sun Belt state fairs, apple harvest fiestas and Oktoberfest parties, October events in 2024 run the gamut of good times. Alabama

Start your month down on the coast at the Alabama Coastal Birdfest (October 4-6), where you'll get an up-close view of a fantastic fall migration. In Gulf Shores, the National Shrimp Festival will celebrate all things crustacean during the 51st edition of this event (October 10-13), a gathering that features great seafood, live music and plenty of tasty brews. That same weekend sees the 53rd edition of the Kentuck Festival of the Arts (October 19-20) take place and later in the month, the Alabama Renaissance Faire returns to The Shoals on October 26-27. 

Alaska

In Fairbanks, the 2024 Fall Festival will take place on October 5, featuring food vendors and a chance to pick your own big orange pumpkin. Once again, the special town of Sitka will celebrate Alaska Day with gusto during an event that will take place from October 13-19, marking the anniversary of the official transfer of Alaska from Russia to the United States back in 1867. Expect the usual array of reenactment ceremonies, dances, contests and a parade.

Arizona

First and foremost, the remarkable ¡Viva Tucson! event will celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month through October 15. The Arizona State Fair is back in Phoenix through October 27 and will bring its signature brand of rides, rodeos, fried food on a stick and A-list concerts (The All American Rejects, Vanilla Ice, Rob Base and a host of tribute acts will take the stage this year). Elsewhere, Kingman will hold the Route 66 Fest on October 11-12, the Helldorado Days festival (October 18-20) will bring three days of gunfight re-enactment shows, street revelry, fashion shows and a parade to Tombstone and Scottsdale will hold both the Taco Festival and Italian Festival on October 19-20. 

Arkansas

Fiesta En Soma (October 4) will celebrate the rich tradition of Latino cultures in Little Rock's SoMa neighborhood, while the Hot Springs Documentary Film Festival will return on October 18-26 with a host of top-notch docs. In Eureka Springs, the spooky-fun Zombie Crawl will take to the streets of downtown on Oct 26 (think parade, Thriller dance tutorials and a 'Macabre Market') and the Nightmare in the Ozarks Film Festival will thrill audiences on Oct 25-26. This, all in edition to the eerie happenings at the 1886 Crescent Hotel & Spa, which famously lays claim to the title of being the most haunted hotel in America. Back in Little Rock, the Arkansas State Fair will run from October 11-20.

California

Colorado

The 47th Annual Cedaredge Applefest (October 4-6) will once again celebrate the local apple harvest with over 175 vendors, arts & crafts, a chili cookoff, tractor & motorcycle show and many more fun things to do for the whole family. Get into the Halloween spirit at Telluride Horror Show (October 11-13), which is the state's first and longest-running horror film festival, and then why not end your month with one of the state's most original events: The 30th Annual Emma Crawford Coffin Races and Festival in Manitou Springs (October 26).

Louisiana

Then, make a beeline for Chackbay and its annual Louisiana Gumbo Festival (October 11-13) this month, where you'll be able to enjoy plenty of bowls of gumbo and get down to some great music. In New Orleans, October 19 is the date for the annual Krewe of Boo Halloween Parade and back up in Shreveport, the 118th Annual Louisiana State Fair will take place on October 30 and run well into November. 

Maine

Mississippi

Texas

Finally, Garden Glow returns to the magnificent Maymont estate in Richmond, transforming the space into a wonderland of fanciful light displays (October 16 - November 10, closed Mondays).

Join beer lovers from all over the nation in the Yakima Valley at the Fresh Hop Ale Fest on October 5, where you can sample sensational craft beers made exclusively with hops from the Yakima Valley. The Bavarian-inspired town of Leavenworth will hold its beloved Oktoberfest on three weekends this year (October 4-5, 11-12 and 18-19) while foodies will want to head west to the coast for some great crab at the Dungeness Crab & Seafood Festival in Port Angeles (October 11-13) or go to Grayland for a "berry" fun time at the 31st Annual Cranberry Harvest Festival on October 12-13.

Set a course for Salem and the annual Apple Butter Festival (October 3-5), where you will be able to enjoy a parade, live music, fireworks and historical apple butter demonstrations. Berkeley Springs will throw its own apple butter-based bash on October 12-13 this year, with plenty of tasty treats. Last but certainly not least, the state's world-famous New River Gorge Bridge will host the annual Bridge Day (the only day you're legally allowed to BASE jump off the bridge) on October 19. The town of Bayfield will hold its beloved Bayfield Apple Festival on October 4-6, with events like a parade, apple-peeling contest and plenty of autumnal delicacies on hand for sampling. Elsewhere, the Kohler Food & Wine Festival will take place in Kohler on October 17-20, an event dedicated to wine, food and acclaimed chefs.

Sheridan will again be the setting for some sensational films at the WYO Film Festival, which will come to a crescendo on October 3-6. In Jackson Hole, the acclaimed Jackson Hole Playhouse will put on a production of "A Haunting Halloween" from October 16 - November 2, and in Laramie, the Ghost Tours of Laramie City will return on October 24-25.
