The American Society of Travel Advisors' (ASTA) latest guidance regarding the intensifying conflict in the Middle East urges travel advisors to monitor advisories from the U.S. Department of State, prepare clients for potential itinerary changes or delays, and maintain communication with suppliers and travelers as the situation continues to develop.

The advisory posted to ASTA’s website today also encouraged advisors to direct travelers toward official government resources, including the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP).

Advisors are encouraged to remind clients to review their travel insurance policies carefully, as some plans exclude losses related to war or military conflict, or exclude coverage to destinations like Israel.

The guidance comes as conflict in the Middle East has disrupted flights and prompted travel advisories from the U.S. government. The U.S. government is currently working to evacuate stranded travelers, but the lack of a rapid response has prompted questions from affected travelers.

“Travel advisors play a vital role in helping travelers navigate rapidly changing global conditions,” said Zane Kerby, ASTA president and CEO. “As tensions in the Middle East affect travel throughout the region, advisors are working diligently to keep their clients informed, prepared and connected to reliable sources of information."
