For the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, the U.S. basketball teams are fortunate enough to call Silversea Cruises' 296-guest all-suite Silver Cloud its home away from home, serviced by 222 crew members. Next on the ship's agenda is an extensive strengthening of its hull in August 2017 to transfer it over to Silversea Expeditions for polar region exploration beginning as soon as November 2017.
Accommodations onboard the luxury cruise ship range from the 240-square-foot one-bedroom Vista Suite to the 827-square-foot two-bedroom Owner's Suite (pictured above is the grand suite). Highlights include elegant marble bathrooms, walk-in wardrobe closets, fully-stocked mini-bars and Pratesi brand bed linens and down atop premium mattresses, in which athletes will be able to rejuvenate between games.
Perhaps less frequented for its current charter are public spaces such as the casino and boutiques, which must remain closed while in port, but the fitness center and Silversea's signature spa facilities are surely coming in handy. The pool deck also offers an oasis for rest and relaxation as well as a quick dip or a few laps.
And feeding the teammates are four dining venues, if not extensive room service in the plush suites. The Restaurant main dining room serves the line's gourmet cuisine inside as does the Pool Bar & Grill for an al fresco setting. Meanwhile, La Terrazza cooks up excellent Italian favorites including tasty pizzas and pastas, and Le Champagne is the ship's special Wine Restaurant by Relais & Châteaux, the only at sea.
For further unwinding, the Silver Cloud offers the Panorama Lounge for scenic Brazilian views and the Show Lounge for an array of entertainment options.
