For travelers who love to set sail with Norwegian Cruise Line, the popular towel animals found in the cabins and suites of ships in the fleet could be a thing of the past.
According to CruiseCritic.com, Norwegian has eliminated towel animals on several of the ships in the cruise line's fleet and reduced the number found on other vessels as part of an effort to become more environmentally friendly.
Whether the towel animals are used by customers or not, they are thrown in with the dirty sheets when the cleaning crew handles each room. By washing fewer towels, the cruise line would use less water, soap and energy.
"We are committed to being a responsible corporate citizen by fostering a culture of awareness and respect for our world's resources," a Norwegian spokesperson told Cruise Critic. "Our mission is to continually improve our sustainability culture through fresh innovation, progressive education and open collaboration."
"As such, from time to time, we explore opportunities to expand our efforts," the statement continued. "In this instance, we are assessing the impact of reducing the number of towel animals we showcase aboard a few of our ships. We understand that many of our guests enjoy them as part of the experience of cruising with us, so towel animals remain available upon request."
Norwegian officials did not reveal which ships will adopt the new animal towel policies or when the new plan goes into full effect.
