Disneyland Employees Reach Tentative Contract Deal, Averting Strike

Disneyland workers have reached a tentative agreement with Disney for new contracts that include the wage increases and other measures the employees were seeking.

A statement released by the Disney Workers Rising Bargaining Committee yesterday said the tentative deal contains “significant wage increases for all cast members, seniority increases and the retention of premiums” and also addresses “issues that will make the attendance policy work better for cast members."

“We have fought hard for the past four months and this tentative agreement would not have been possible without the strength we showed this past week with our rally and Unfair Labor Practice vote,” the union said in its statement.

In its own statement, Disneyland Resort spokesperson Jessica Good emphasized that "We care deeply about the well-being of our cast members and are pleased to have reached a tentative agreement with [the unions] that addresses what matters most to our cast while positioning Disneyland Resort for future growth and job creation."

The tentative contract deal means the park’s employees will not strike. If they had, it would have been the first strike at the Southern California theme park in 40 years.

Union members had voted on Friday to authorize a strike, citing alleged unfair labor practices during the ongoing contract negotiations, according to NBC. The union reported that 99 percent of its members who participated in the vote approved the proposed walkout action.

The union’s efforts to secure the deal also included actions like wearing union buttons depicting a Mickey Mouse-style white glove raising a fist, signing a petition, and 1,000-person rallies.

“We have shown Disney that we are the true magic makers of the park. We stood up to the company’s unfair labor practices and showed them that we were willing to do whatever it took to get the contract we deserved,” the union added.

In its statement, the union stressed that the proposed contract is only tentative and will not be finalized until union members vote on it.

“We believe this three-year agreement meets our needs and delivers us the wages, seniority increases, premiums, and protections we deserve,” the union added.

The proposed contract covers a variety of Disneyland employees, including custodians, ride operators, candymakers and merchandise clerks.

The vote is scheduled to take place on July 29.
