If you are looking for a time waster that will keep you cultured and entertained, then you better look at the Google Street View of the British Museum.
Some of you may have missed it while sipping mulled wine over the holiday, but Google is now allowing Internet denizens the ability to whistle and stroll around the iconic museum from the comfort of their own homes (h/t GOOD, National Geographic).
Just take a second to tour the immense setting and you begin to realize how insanely cool this really is.
The project comes by way of Google Cultural Institute, which aims to "explore cultural treasures in extraordinary detail."
In this case, it succeeds in just that, allowing those who have never been able to traipse through the British Museum doors to virtually walk up to the Rosetta Stone.
For those who have visited the museum, you will enjoy a vantage that doesn't actually feature droves of fellow tourists attempting their grandest selfie while you try to appreciate the enormous rock.
National Geographic reports on just how expansive this virtual walkthrough is: "the British Museum recently unveiled the results of its partnership with the Google Cultural Institute (GCI): the world's largest Google Street View of an interior space, covering nine floors and 85 permanent galleries of the museum."
This amounts to "roughly 80,000 artifacts on display," which also equates to a few glorious hours of browsing the Internet while you really should be doing something a bit more productive at work.
As the report also promises, about 200 items are not on this special Street View of the museum, which means you are getting a rather immersive view of one of the more treasured collections of artifacts in the world.
