Walk along a beach long enough and you are bound to stumble across something of note: a cool seashell, an interesting rock…a cool abyss.
Neatorama's John Farrier spotted the above image lurking over on Reddit, where user RTWin80weeks posted his amazing find.
The Reddit user merely offered, "I stumbled upon this beautiful abyss while hiking near Lagos, Portugal."
It's easy to see why the image would garner interest throughout the "Earth Porn" subreddit, a subsection of the popular website that embraces the most stunning images taken around the globe.
In this case, the image netted the user 4,636 votes and 808 comments. The giant fixture seems to dissolve into infinite nothingness, bordered by blue water and vertigo-inducing cliffs. It's truly a delicacy for the eyes.
However, it would be nice to have some closure in the way of, "Does this thing actually continue forever like in Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey?"
We think not.
Thankfully, there may be an answer spotted by Farrier among the comments section. Reddit user ski6666, for example, provides a brief video of what is purported as the bottom of the abyss.
The video cuts before we get a full glimpse of the height of the gaping hole. Also, there are some who disagree that this is the exact hole in question.
One user states, "It doesn't look right to me either; in the video, the bottom of the hole is at sea level, but in the photo it looks way deeper. Could just be the perspective throwing me off though."
A local adds, "Are you sure that's the same hole? (Because) there are a few of them around that coast, and it looks like it might be a different one. I'm from Lagos, although I haven't been in any of those holes in years, and they keep changing and wearing out."
In any case, Lagos has some outrageously beautiful rock formations that are calling us from across the pond.
