Demolition has
begun on the Mirage Hotel in Las Vegas, which closed on July 17 and is
slated to become a Hard Rock property in 2027.
In fact, the
guitar-shaped hotel that
is emblematic of the Hard Rock is scheduled to be built right on the spot
where the iconic volcano of the Mirage used to sit. The volcano will be
destroyed.
The new hotel will
be comprised of 600 rooms. The transformation is expected to cost about $800
million.
The demolition is
the first phase of the project, and the famous volcano will be among the first to
go.
For many, it is a
tearful time. The Mirage is more than 30 years old and ushered in the era of
the mega-resort and the look of what we now see in Las Vegas today. The erupting
volcano was a big part of that history.
Joe Lupo,
president of Hard Rock Las Vegas, said dismantling the volcano will only take a
few months and will serve as the foundation for the new Hard Rock tower.
The transformation
of the Mirage is expected to result in a loss of more than 3,300 jobs and
employees being laid off. Hard Rock said it will pay out more than $80 million
in severance and compensation.
By Nevada State
Gaming Law, The Mirage had to pay out $1.6
million in table games before it closed.
