Marriott International has taken another step to expand its luxury footprint in the lucrative AsiaPacific market.
The hotel giant announced Tuesday that it has reached an agreement with long-time partner YTL Hotels to develop four new properties in Malaysia and Japan.
The companies will team up on two new luxury hotels in Malaysia under the JW Marriott and EDITION flags and have signed Memorandums of Understanding for an EDITION hotel and a W Hotel property in Niseko Village, Hokkaido, Japan.
YTL's second JW Marriott hotel will be conveniently located near Malaysia's largest transit hub in Kuala Lumpur Sentral while the country's first 350-room EDITION hotel will bring guests close to the lively Kuala Lumpur City Centre.
In Japan, the new EDITION and W properties will build on existing luxury accommodation offerings in the Hokkaido ski resort of Niseko. YTL is already planning to open a Ritz-Carlton Reserve in the village.
According to The Star Online, the JW Marriott in KL Sentral is likely to be the first property completed in 2021.
"We are pleased with today's announcement, which advances our goal of doubling our luxury presence in Asia Pacific. With the addition of these hotels to our system, our guests will have even more luxurious opportunities to explore Malaysia and Japan, two exciting and diverse travel destinations," Marriott International, Asia Pacific president and managing director, Craig S. Smith said in a statement.
YTL Hotels currently has 11 Marriott hotels in its portfolio, including the 578-room JW Marriott Kuala Lumpur, which was recently relaunched following a complete refurbishment.
The latest agreement will grow the Marriott-YTL connection to 15 hotel across six different brands.
Marriott's recent efforts to expand across the continent are being mirrored by competitors, including Best Western Hotels & Resorts and InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG), which has signed at least three management contracts under its Kimpton boutique brand for hotels in Indonesia and China.
