The future of travel is standing in one place with a contraption strapped to your face.
According to a PRNewswire release, Marriott is brining virtual reality to travelers with a tour of its innovative "Teleporter."
And by "Teleporter," they mean an immersive virtual reality experience that isn't unlike a photo booth on steroids.
If you are just a bit curious, you will enjoy the following video that explains what we are talking about here:
Ever since we saw The Lawnmower Man, we have been waiting for virtual realty to meet our needs. (We are now patiently waiting for Jeff Fahey's Oscar nod.)
Now I am all for teleportation. The minute they invent something that mandates a man named O'Brien beaming me down to a planet's surface is the second I cram my chubby body into one of those Star Trek suits. Until then, this virtual reality guff will have to do, giving us something that is more akin to the holodeck.
From the looks of it, the wearer can be whisked away to wherever they desire, the only constraints being software.
According to Marriott Hotels, you will even get the smells of the destination, which means providers can go ahead and delete that New Jersey program immediately. Traveling to various parts of the world, we can safely say that we don't necessarily need smells pumped into our nostrils.
Visitors can try out the innovative travel conveyance shortly. Here is where you can put on an Oculus Rift DK2 and get a virtual vacation:
- Sept.19-23: New York Marriott Marquis
- Sept. 26-29: Boston Marriott Cambridge
- Oct. 2-5: Marriott Marquis Washington DC
- Oct. 9-12: Atlanta Marriott Marquis
- Oct. 17-20: Dallas Marriott City Center
- Oct. 24-27: San Diego Marriott Marquis
- Nov. 6-9: San Jose Marriott
- Nov.13-16: San Francisco Marriott Marquis
Or you can find out more at Marriott's Travel Brilliantly website.
Marriott is working with Academy Award-winning Framestore, which the video reminds worked on Gravity, to create the next evolution in travel. Of course, there is very little travel involved.
But imagine needing a little respite years from now. Taking a trip would be as easy as popping by a shop like in Total Recall, minus the all-out battles on Mars-unless you order that obviously.
Now there is no word on whether this technology will include awkward small talk with other tourists that comes with any vacation, because it just wouldn't be a trip without that.
