The James New York NoMad hotel in New York City is willing to offer guests 10% off their room rate for every night that they can go without technology.
If you think you're up for The James New York NoMad's Digital Detox Package challenge, you'll have to lock up your cell phone and other electronics like iPads or laptops at the front desk upon arrival. You'll then be assigned a room that's technology free, which means - no TV, laptop, alarm clock, etc.
James La Russo, a senior manager at The James New York NoMad told Moneyish where the idea for the package came from:
"It came about from guest feedback that they weren't partaking in our wellness programs. We said, 'we should take away their phones.'"
Research has shown that constant screen time can cause anxiety and depression, among other mental health conditions.
For $299 per night, the Digital Detox package offers wellness perks like a free meditation session at the nearby Inscape meditation studio and a choice of books and newspapers that can be preselected before arrival. The James New York NoMad Hotel hopes it will encourage guests to mingle with each other in real life, especially those who are traveling solo.
The James New York NoMad isn't the only one in the hospitality industry that's encouraging travelers to ditch the phones and laptops. For instance, Sushi Lounge in Hoboken, New Jersey, offers a 20% discount on Tuesdays to those who put their phone in a box on the table until the check arrives.
No one has yet to complete the Digital Detox package at The James New York NoMad hotel as the promotion just launched. Until then, it's a good reminder for us all to put our phones away for a bit, especially on vacation.
