In response to
increasing demand, the U.S. State Department is set to open six new passport
agencies in various cities nationwide. The new agency offices will be located
in Salt Lake City, Kansas City, Orlando, Charlotte, San Antonio and Cincinnati.
This comes on the heels of the State Department reopening its online passport renewal portal.
According to a
State Department press
release, this expansion brings the total number of passport agencies and
centers operated by the Department to 35. The exact opening dates for these new
facilities have not yet been specified.
In its statement,
the State Department emphasized the necessity of these new additions, saying, “More
Americans can travel abroad today than at any time in our history,” adding that
they, “reflect our commitment to provide prompt customer services to more
Americans closer to where they live.”
Passport agencies
are specifically designed to handle applications for travelers with imminent
international travel plans within 14 days or in cases of life-or-death
emergencies. Appointments are mandatory for these services.
For those who do
not require such urgent passport processing, the State Department offers over
7,400 public passport acceptance facilities across the country. These
facilities include places like post offices, public libraries and local
government offices, where travelers can submit their passport applications.
Beyond these
specialized agencies and acceptance facilities, the State Department also organizes
Special Passport Acceptance Fairs around the nation, according to a report from Travel
+ Leisure. These events, initially created to expedite processing times for
first-time applicants, will be held in Arizona, California, Florida, New
Hampshire, New Jersey, North Carolina and South Carolina this summer.
In a move to
streamline renewals, the State Department reintroduced the option for U.S.
residents to submit their passport renewal applications online. This service,
initially launched in 2022, had previously been put on pause. But, now, it is
available to those whose passports were issued between 2009 and 2015, provided
no major changes to personal information are required.
For those seeking
passport processing, the current wait time is six to eight weeks for routine
service. Expedited service, which costs an additional $60, has a processing
time of two to three weeks.
