The United States Department of State has officially issued a worldwide travel alert for Americans due to an increase in terrorist threats.
According to the official website of the State Department, information obtained by authorities suggests that terrorist groups like ISIS, al-Qaeda, Boko Haram and others are continuing to plan terrorist attacks in multiple regions.
The travel alert is effective immediately and is set to expire on Feb. 24, 2016.
The report from the State Department also suggests that individuals inspired by major terrorist organizations could also be planning attacks without any official affiliation to any particular groups.
In response, United States citizens traveling overseas are asked to exercise caution and vigilance when in public places. Many of the attacks have been at large sporting events, theatres, open markets and aviation services, and Americans must be aware of their surroundings and use their best judgment when visiting crowded places.
The State Department also provided some advice about staying safe that includes listening to authorities by checking out local media outlets, preparing for additional security screening and staying in touch with family and friends.
Many foreign governments are doing everything in their power to thwart terrorism, but Americans traveling internationally must remain vigilant. For those who want to feel safer, the State Department also offers the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program, which provides security messages and make it easier to locate you in an emergency.
