Responsible tour operator Intrepid Travel has made the decision to cancel its upcoming trips to Cuba with departures running through April 30, 2026, due to the island’s energy crisis.
Cuba is experiencing repeated nationwide power outages, including one on March 16 that left about ten million people without power. The unstable energy crisis is caused by fuel shortages due to the U.S. blockade of Venezuelan gas and oil following January's strikes on Venezuela that captured its president.
Travelers currently still in Cuba will safely continue and complete their planned itineraries.
Travelers booked on an itinerary departing any time through April 30 will be able to rebook to another destination, receive a travel credit for a future trip with Intrepid, or can request a refund. All impacted travelers will be contacted by the tour operator.
The operator’s Travel Alerts page will show the most recent news about impacted travel, and the decision about future departures following April 30 will be made in the coming weeks.
“This decision was not made lightly,” said Leigh Barnes, President of the Americas, Intrepid Travel. “We know this has a real impact on the local workers and families whose livelihoods are tied to tourism, and our thoughts are with them. We remain committed to supporting our partners and returning as soon as conditions become stable.”
The tour operator has had to cancel numerous trips to other destinations recently, too, most notably in Egypt, Oman and Jordan. Tours to Egypt will resume on April 1 if the situation remains stable there, and Oman and Jordan trips will resume later in April if the operator deems the destinations safe to resume operations.
