In 2006, Jeni Chaffer had been out of the business and finance world when she was mulling whether she wanted to go back to corporate life. It was at this time an opportunity came along to buy an existing storefront in Central Illinois.
It was an easy decision for Chaffer, who opened the doors to Journeys Travel Inc. in Bourbonnais.
Being from a small town, she was always amazed at how many people never took a chance and experienced life outside their circle.
"By becoming a travel consultant, I can offer experiences around the world and my clients know they have me by their side every step of the way," said Chaffer.
Journeys Travel Inc. specializes in romance travel, including destination weddings, honeymoons, anniversary trips, vow renewals and commitment ceremonies.
"As I tell my couples at our consultation, the memories you make on these trips will be the ones that will help get you through the rough patches," she said. "I enjoy being part of the celebration."
From the time she opened the doors to her new career, Chaffer always believed that making and maintaining relationships with clients, suppliers and others in the industry was important: "I always try to surround myself with people who inspire me, push me and believe in me."
Like many other travel agents, she believes that one of the biggest obstacles facing her peers is constantly having to educate the public on the value and professional services they provide.
While Chaffer works hard at doing that, she strongly believes in three things to become a successful agent that consumers want to work with:
"First is training: attend every webinar, conference, training you can, not only travel specific but also marketing, business and social media," said Chaffer.
"Second, I believe you are most effective when you focus on a niche. Lastly, you need to build relationships with your suppliers, BDMS and other agents for support and guidance through this business. I may be in business for myself, but I have a tribe surrounding me."
One of Chaffer's favorite aspects of her career is when she is part of a surprise proposal or planning a special honeymoon or anniversary trip.
"One surprise proposal trip, I prepared a packing list for the bride and she didn't know where she was headed until they arrived at the airport," she said. "Once they arrived on the property, there were many special touches which she thought were to celebrate a special date. Instead, we had arranged for a proposal, photographer to capture the moment and the room prepared for a romantic evening."
When she's not traveling for business or booking someone else's vacation, Chaffer loves traveling to Mexico and the Caribbean.
"Every time I go to Jamaica, Saint Lucia or Riviera Maya, I feel like I am coming home," she said. "Hearing those waves and feeling the warmth of the sun is good for my soul."
