Cruises are often considered one of the best vacations for multi-generational families.

They naturally solve many logistical aspects of the travel experience that big family trips can have, make it easier to just unpack once, offer a variety of activities for all age groups and make group dining more manageable.

One of the best aspects of family cruises is the built-in time together (or apart) when everyone needs a bit of a break. Kids can go to supervised clubs, teens can hang out with other teens, adults can head to shows and entertainment venues, and grandparents can relax or attend their favorite activities.

Predictable costs is also a great benefit for families, given that lodging, meals, entertainment and transportation between destinations is often bundled in one package.

While the multi-gen family has a choice of many cruise lines, some stand out as being best overall for families traveling with different age groups.

Royal Caribbean

Royal Caribbean is one of the largest and most famous cruise lines in the world, known for their massive ships, innovative attractions and family-friendly vacations. Part of Royal Caribbean Group, the line operates a fleet of about 29 cruise ships sailing to 300-plus ports around the world. Destinations include the Caribbean and the Bahamas, Alaska, the Mediterranean Sea, South Pacific, Asia and Northern Europe. Private island destinations such as Perfect Day at CocoCay and Labadee are designed exclusively for cruise guests.

What makes Royal Caribbean unique is that it’s famous for adding big attractions normally found at theme parks. These include surf and skydiving simulators, rock-climbing walls, zip lines, ice-skating rinks, and impressive water parks. Its big, thrill-inspired activity-packed ships are often called “floating resorts.”

Families have dozens of restaurants and cafes to choose from, Broadway-style shows, comedy and music and aqua theater diving shows. New entertainment partnerships such as live shows based on ‘America’s Got Talent’ are being added to newer ships and some vessels even have Central Park-style areas with real plants and trees right inside the ship.

Disney Cruise Line

Disney cruises are renowned for family entertainment and immersive experiences. While they are best for families with younger children, there’s enough activity to keep each traveler happy and entertained.

While Disney cruises are very organized and polished, they are typically more expensive than other cruise lines. If you want a share of the Disney magic while at sea and port however, this cruise line delivers enchantment in a big way.

Cabins are built with families in mind and include split bathrooms, extra storage, pull-down beds for kids and verandah rooms that can sleep multiple people.

Ships include Broadway-style productions in large theaters featuring shows such as Frozen, Beauty and the Beast, and other Disney musicals. Other shared experiences included deck parties, a sail-away extravaganza, fireworks at sea, moving screenings, character meet-and-greets and themed nights like Pirate Night. And a day stop to Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay offers a tropical retreat with a myriad of family activities,

Disney is also known for its high-quality youth programs for all age groups to include an Oceaneer Club, Edge for tweens and Vibe for teens. Many clubs are themed like Marvel, Star Wars, princess castles, imagineering labs and more.

The cruise line also pioneered a system called rotational dining. Instead of choosing restaurants every night, guests rotate through themed restaurants with servers moving with the family. This is great for multi-gen families because everyone eats together, servers learn your preferences and the restaurants become part of the entertainment.

Norwegian

Known for its “freestyle cruising” concept, a Norwegian sail works for multi-gen groups as there are a myriad of dining options onboard with no fixed dinner times assigned. The flexibility helps when different family members want to eat or enjoy activities at different times or do better with less rigid schedules.

The cruise line offers activities for each age group to include water parks, waterslides, rock climbing, ropes courses, go-kart racetracks at sea, laser tag arenas along with live shows and entertainment.

Norwegian offers accommodations for large families that include connecting staterooms, family suites, multi-bedroom cabins and luxury areas like The Haven for extra privacy. The cruise line often runs promotions such as discounts for third and forth guests in a cabin, which helps lower the cost for families traveling with children.

MSC

MCS has become one of the fastest growing cruise brands as it combines affordable pricing, kid-focused activities and large modern ships. The cruise line offers five dedicated kids’ clubs for ages 0-17, LEGO-themed playrooms, water parks, pools and aqua play areas, 4D cinemas, Formula-1 racing simulators, family entertainment centers, mini-bowling and Broadway-style shows and live entertainment. The budget-conscious brand often unveils discounts for additional guests in a cabin and “kids sail free” promotions on select itineraries on both cabins and suites.

Princess

Those looking for a calmer cruise experience can look at Princess for a more relaxed atmosphere. The ships tend to be quieter with fewer party crowds, featuring more educational talks, destination programs and comfortable lounges and theaters.

Camp Discovery runs youth programs for ages 3-17 with different spaces. Kids can also participate in themed events, movie nights, gaming tournaments and learning activities and popular experiences focus on shared adventures in lieu of thrill attractions. Princess offers several room types to accommodate larger families including staterooms that can sleep four and suites that can sleep up to eight guests.

Carnival

Offering a fun, casual vibe, Carnival is one of the most budget-friendly cruise lines, with a focus on activities multiple age groups can enjoy together. Popular activities include water parks, water slides, minigolf, basketball, arcades and games rooms and a unique attraction called SkyRide where guests pedal bikes suspended above the ship’s deck.

With strong kids and teen programs, Carnivals “fun ships” also offer plenty of social events, game shows and a much more casual vibe than other cruise lines. Family-friendly cabins feature connecting staterooms, rooms that can sleep up to five and Family Harbor rooms with special family perks and lounges.

Celebrity

Though the upscale cruise line may not rank at the top of the list for “high energy” multi-gen travel, Celebrity offers a balanced experience that isn’t just focused on kids’ attractions but offers comfort, culture and calmer shared activities for all age groups.

“Camp at Sea” programs offer themed activities, arts, crafts, treasure hunts, sports and a Teen Club. Dining experiences sport more sophisticated global cuisine for the adults but there are plenty of kid-friendly options as well.

Travel Tips for Multi-Gen Cruise Travel

It’s important to have the input from the varied ages of family travelers, so the right cruise line is selected. Destination will also play a part, whether it’s an Alaskan cruise or a sail to the Caribbean.

Multi-person deals can also help for families who are more budget-conscious with some lines offering third and fourth passenger discounts in a cabin. Pre-paid extras often cost less when booked early.

Speaking of booking early, multi-gen groups should make their reservation as soon as possible to ensure the cruise line has availability and that if preferred, staterooms can be closer together.

Using a travel professional makes a huge difference, especially since these agents have tremendous experiences with the different types of cruise ships, best itineraries for the multi-generational family and can assist with staying within budget.
