HX’s ship MS Maud will return to the water this spring after undergoing repairs to fix damage caused by a rogue wave last month.
HX (formerly Hurtigruten Expeditions) shared this week that MS Maud will re-enter service in mid-April for two expedition cruises around the British Isles. After that, it will sail to the Arctic in July for expedition cruises around Greenland and Iceland. Starting in October, MS Maud will offer cruises to Antarctica and South America.
The 570-guest ship was making its way from Florø, Norway, to Tilbury, England, in the North Sea on Dec. 21 when a rogue wave struck. Rogue waves can be twice the size of surrounding waves and are unpredictable, which makes them potentially dangerous and destructive to vessels.
The wave smashed out several windows and caused the ship to lose power. MS Maud’s navigational equipment also went out. Passengers donned life vests and held onto tables as powerful waves and wind knocked the ship around. With Danish rescuers standing by, the ship limped into Bremerhaven, Germany, under its own power.
Fortunately, none of the 266 passengers and 131 crew members onboard at the time were seriously injured.
